Prep Baseball Report

Day Number 1 at Huntington Park

Division I Semifinal: Perrysburg defeats Willoughby South 4 to 3
Headed into the bottom of the 7th, Willoughby South lead Perrysburg 3 to 1. All the pieces seemed in place for a victory that would lead the Rebels into the state championship finale.

Junior right-handed pitcher Cameron Knott (8-2) had pitched six innings of baseball, only allowing one run and keeping Perrysburg?s offense at bay.

Senior Aaron Lindgren continued to stay hot at the plate, including a 2-run homerun in the first inning.

However, Perrysburg and senior Matt Garbig had other plans.

Perrysburg started the 7th inning with a lead off hit. Soon after, the Perrysburg base runners kept finding their way on through a walk, ground-rule double, and eventually an intentional walk to load the bases.

Then, Garbig, who went 2 for 3 on the day, stepped up to the plate and hit a walk-off double that cleared the bases and eventually the Perrysburg bench.

Alec Schmenk (2011 Toledo recruit) went all 7 innings for the Yellow Jackets giving up 3 earned runs and striking out 9.

Division I Semifinal: Lakota East defeats Grove City 7 to 2
The Greyhounds, who many considered the Cinderella of this year?s Division I tournament, will not be moving on to the Big Dance.

Lakota East (23-7), lead by a complete game from junior left handed pitcher Michael Conrad, were victorious in Columbus by a score of 7 to 2.

Beyond the pitching performance from Conrad, Lakota East was powered by upper classmen and underclassmen alike at the plate.

Senior Jesse Rait hit a key two run homerun while sophomore catcher Jarrett Rindfleisch had two doubles and scored three runs.

Division IV Semifinal: Minster defeats Newark Catholic 6 to 5
Newark Catholic (22-7) seemed destined for another state champion game.

Junior right-handed pitcher Jimmy Lough was sitting at 88 mph with his fastball and dominating the opposition.

But, when the 5th inning came around, the Wave defense unraveled and open the doors of opportunity for Minster (22-8).

Fueled by a mixture of errors and timely hits, the Minster offense plated 5 runs lead by Mitchel Poeppelman, who went 1 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBIs and Craig Purpus, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Newark Catholic, who out hit Minster 9 to 6, couldn?t muster a timely hit with the bases loaded in the 6th. In the 7th, sophomore standout Adam Niemeyer closed the door on Newark Catholic with an 84 mph fastball that helped him strike out consecutive batters.

On the day, the Wave were lead by sophomore infielder James Thomas, who went 3 for 3 with an RBI, and junior Tanner Potts who went 2 for 3 with a key double.

DIV Semifinal: New Middletown Springfield defeats Delphos St. Johns 9 to 2
While Delphos St. John?s (17-5) delivered the initial punch, New Middletown Springfield (19-6) quickly responded and never looked back.

In the first, fourth, and 5th innings, Springfield scored 3 runs to over power Delphos St. John?s starter Jordan Leininger and reliever Curtis Geise.

At the plate, Ronnie Bovo and Nick Russell each collected two hits a piece with Bovo picking up 3 key RBI?s.
