6/17/22

MLB Draft Combine: Long, lanky frame. Full, over the head windup with long path in back. Leveraged arm action. Good direction to the plate. Athletic delivery with moderate effort from three-quarter release point. FB 92-94 with slight fade. Longer breaking CB 76-77 at 2650 rpm. SL 83-85. CH 86-88.

4/21/22

Some guys just need a change of scenery and Staine is one of them. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Maryland transfer showed some velo in the Cape last summer, as well as strong performance with a 2.34 ERA in 15.1 IP. He has continued to show velo this spring, sitting 94-96 and touching 97. He's also continued to perform, but has now taken it to a near ridiculous level. Staine has yet to allow an earned run in eight starts totaling 32.2 IP. In those innings, he's allowed just 11 hits, walking 13 and striking out 40. Opponents are hitting just .105.

5/13/19

Staine, a Maryland recruit, turned in a strong start, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four in six innings. He pitches from a 3/4 slot, getting arm-side life on his fastball, which sat in the high 80s and touched 90. He had a curveball at 70-73 with loose, 10/4 break and flashed a flatter, harder slider at 78.

4/14/19

Maryland recruit. Wiry, athletic 6-foot-3 180-pounds. Potential draft guy this June. Topped at 91, sat mostly 86-88 touching 89. 75-78 11/5 CB for strikes with late late. Long, loose arm action from a high-¾ slot. Slow, methodical start to delivery into a tall, firm balance point. Hips and shoulders close off a touch to lead from hip down the mound. Hands break down his body with uphill shoulders at front foot landing. Lands slightly opened, but finishes balance with momentum and weight toward homeplate. Shows great body control for a lanky hurler. Fastball shows some arm side sink and run. Tough to pick up - a lot of levers and length coming at the hitter.

2/09/19

Six-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. Excellent looking arm and showed it at the event. The fastball sat 87-89 mph with plus life to the pitch. The breaking pitch is 72-75 mph, correct in shape. The slider is a tick smaller, sitting 75-76 mph. The changeup has the right action, sitting 81-82 mph, needs to be a tick slower. The delivery is online with the feet, ¾ in slot. The arm is whippy and fast. The leg drive is simple and he rotates late in the delivery. The tempo is easy and under control. Seems like he is just playing easy catch and the gun is reading upper 80’s. Bunch more in the tank with this guy.
