2/11/18

2018 IF/RHP Marcus Ernst (Dublin Coffman HS) finds his name on the top performers list for the second consecutive year at this event. The Ohio State recruit looks athletic and comfortable in the box. He made it look easy in BP, staying balanced throughout his swing while smacking rising line drives all over the field. He looks to have added strength as the ball comes off his bat better than it ever has without adding effort to his stroke. A three-sport standout at Dublin Coffman who is a name to look to follow for the Buckeyes when he becomes baseball specific.

60-yard Dash: 7.0

Infield Velocity: DNP

6-foot-0, 175-pound athletic build. Ernst, a member of Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class, is a smooth swinger that is very polished at the plate. The Dublin Coffman product has a series of well timed movements to generate energy into contact. He showed excellent feel for the barrel, getting on plane early and making hard contact to both sides of the field. Looked much improved in the infield with fluid actions and solid glove skills. Projects as a second baseman at the next level.

One of the top two-way guys in his class with a 6-foot, 175-pound athletic frame. Showed off a very smooth swing from the left-side. Is able to creates excellent energy into contact through a rhythmic leg kick load and aggressive stride forward. Starts with his hands low and uses a barrel tip to remain fluid during his stride. Bat showed definite quickness while getting through the zone on a level path. Produced consistently line drives in batting practice with the ability to create backspin. Swing translated into game action as he recorded four hits on the day, three of which were extra base hits. Likely projects as a second baseman. Shows above average range and athleticism in his actions. Top velocity of 78 mph from lower slot with long arm action. Advanced pitchability for his age with feel for all three of his pitches. Isn’t going to over power hitters as his fastball was 81-83 mph but has the ability to work both sides of the plate and change eye levels. Curveball has late, sharp action with an 11/5 shape at 65-68 mph. His changeup is his best offspeed pitch as he is comfortable throwing it in any count. The pitch has good fade to it at 70-73 mph.

Also impressed as a position player and showed why he is considered one of the top left-handed bats in the 2018 class. Starts in an athletic, slightly open stance and has excellent rhythm to his load. Uses a leg kick to gather his weight and keeps his hands in a strong position during his aggressive stride forward. Left-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance, getting himself squared back up to even. He uses a long stride and loads with his hands moving slightly back towards his shoulder. In the games portion of the event he hit three singles and again used all parts of the field. Reached a top exit velocity of 83 mph and ran a 4.51 out of the batter’s box to first base. He has a very mature mound presence with good demeanor. He has a quick rhythm and tempo to his delivery in which he uses easy effort. He lands closed at foot strike and throws across his body. Uses a three-pitch mix, with his fastball showing occasional arm-side run to it at 74-77 mph. Has a tendency to slow down his arm just a little bit when he throws his curveball, but the pitch has good depth with 11/5 tilt at 61-64 mph.
