2013 Prospect Watch: Ryan Arington (CCS)

Arington, a 6-foot-6, 185-pound infield prospect, was recently selected as the top prospect at the Prasco Park Open Identification Event.

He registered a 6.89 in the 60-yard dash. In the field, he uses fluid footwork and showed exceptionally soft hands at shortstop. Although he needs to quicken his transfer, he uses short arm action from a high ¾ slot to register 81 mph across the infield. At the next level, he could project at a number of infield positions. At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a balanced setup, short stride, and explosive lower half to show gap-to-gap power.

In his career at Cincinnati Christian School,  he has been named first team all-conference, first team all Greater Cincinnati, (Cincinnati Enquirer) and first team all-state in baseball and first team all-conference and all-state in basketball.

Last spring, he hit put together an impressive sophomore campaign with a .492 average, 7 doubles, 9 triples, 2 home runs and 31 runs batted in.  On the mound, he went 3-2 with a 1.50 earned run average with 38 strikeouts in 28 innings.

After spending the summer playing for the Cincinnati Spikes, he will be attending a number of college prospect camps, including the WWBA tournament for underclassman in Fort Myers, Florida.

As he heads into his junior year, Arington is hearing from: Kentucky, Michigan State, Michigan, Butler, Xavier, Miami, Indiana State, Lipscomb, Eastern Kentucky, Western Carolina and Morehead State.

Arington, who is a respectful, humble athlete, said that he tries to emulate Derek Jeter and Troy Tulowitzki on the field. But, he quickly followed, “ I try to emulate Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols from a personal standpoint.”

Because of his size and athleticism, many compare Arington to current Cincinnati Red third baseman Scott Rolen. He explains, “I have had coaches tell me that I remind them of Scott Rolen when he was in high school because of my size and the fact that we both had some success in both basketball and baseball.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming baseball season, Arington is clear about his personal and team goals: “I would like to play deep into the state tournament and continue to get stronger and refine my game.”
