2016 Recruiting Trail: Players to look out for

Justin Burgess
Florida Area Scout

Summer ball is a time when players from all over the state, and sometimes all over the country, get to come to together on teams that travel far and wide to face better talent than they faced in their spring high school season. These players get to play and experience vacations simultaneously, create lifelong memories and, most importantly, this is when recruiting is at its peak.

The 2016 class in Florida is very well-rounded and deep, with multiple arms that sit in the mid 90’s, powerful bats, and a number of athletes with plus speed. By now, most of the highly ranked players are committed but there are still a few players that will end up at major D1 schools but have not committed yet. Here are a few of the top 2016 players to keep an eye out for this summer as they will likely be making their decision within the next few months:

. RHP/INF Austin Bergner Windermere Prep 2016

The top ranked player in 2016 in the state of Florida is still uncommitted and it is not because of a shortage of offers. With a tall, projectable, and athletic body that produces a mid 90’s fastball and a plus breaking ball, Bergner should make his college decision sometime this summer. Regardless of when he makes his decision, it will be big news and we will let you know when it happens.

. LHP/OF Rigsby Mosley Bishop Moore 2016

Mosely is a loose, easy-throwing lefty with a fastball that sits in the mid 80’s and runs up into the upper 80’s with solid off speed. Mosely can also hit with an easy swing that produces consistent hard contact and line drives. He is an excellent student and will be showcased well playing for a talented FTB squad, so he should have a number of good options to choose from by the end of this summer.

. 3B/1B/OF Anthony Gonnella Riverview HS 2016

Gonnella is a tall, lean, athletic, and strong player with a nice lefty stroke that produces pop. Anthony had a strong high school season that was highlighted by two multi-home run games. He has above average power and is a solid defender at first with a good arm. He has loose actions and has room to fill out with maturity. Gonnella seems to be a little under the radar for his talent level, but he should be in the spotlight more with a few offers by the end of this summer.
