2017 Underclass Preview: Corner Infielders Analysis

On Sunday, October 18th, we hosted the 2017 Underclass Preview Showcase at Grand Park in Westfield, IN.  


Below we analyze the corner infielders that participated in the event.

Alphabetical order

Tanner Craig, 3B, Austin HS, 2017: 6-foot, 195 pounder ran a 7.44-60 and was 78 across the diamond.  Solid defender at 3B with fluid feet and a clean exchange.  Sure hands, makes plays.  At the plate hits from an open setup.  Possesses quick hands and bat speed from a level path.  Gets to extension.  Back load.  Good use of his lower half.  Present power to his pull-side.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 89.  

Grant Druckemiller, 1B, Bloomington North HS, 2017: 6-foot, 200 pounder ran a 7.64-60 and was 75 across the infield.  Fields the ball clean a 1B, average footwork.  Offensively, this from a wide stance, uses a leg kick.  Bars the arm during the load.  Average bat speed.  At times over rotates the lower half causing him to pull off.  Possesses some pop to his pull-side.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 83 mph.  

Carter Durham, 3B/1B, Yorktown HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 180 pounder ran a 7.28-60 and was 73 across the infield.  Sure hands in the field with fluid footwork, but lacks premium speed.  Exchange is clean and plays through the baseball.  Long arm action.  At the plate hits from a slightly open setup with a minimal load.  Stride is short.  Short, level swing plane.  Average bat speed.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 81 mph.  

JC Hanely, 1B, Carmel HS, 2017: Strong , physical frame at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds.  Ran a 7.28-60 and was 77 across the diamond.  Moves well around the bag with quick, fluid feet.  Sure hands, tendency to field the ball deep. Offensively, loads back and uses a short stride.  Shows good balance in his swing.  Bat speed is quick with a good approach to the ball.  Possesses gap-to-gap power.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 85 off the tee. 

Justin Hensley, 1B, Brebeuf HS, 2017: Strong frame at 6-foot-2, 208 pounds.  Ran a 7.47-60 and was 73 across the infield with accuracy.  Solid defender around the bag with fluid footwork.  At the plate hits from an athletic setup with a smooth load.  Stride was short.  Shows good balance in the swing.  Possesses above average bat speed from a level path.  Ability to drive the gaps.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 88 mph.  

Corbin Landrum, 1B, Huntington North HS, 2017: Athletic frame at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds ran a 7.57-60 and was 77 across the infield.  Defensively shows average hands and feet.  At the plate this from a balanced setup.  Hands tend to drop during the load.  Slight leg kick.  Above average bat speed with an uphill path.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 84 off the tee. 

Ty Lautenschlager, 1B, West Vigo HS, 2017: Physical 6-foot-4, 230 pounder ran a 8.66-60 and was 78 across the infield with some carry.  Plays through the baseball well with a clean exchange.  Offensively, the LHH hits from a slight crouch type setup, loads back.  Stride is short.  Average us of the lower half.  Possesses some bat speed with a slightly uphill swing plane.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 83 mph.   Consistent hard contact during BP.   

Jake Lewis, 1B, Providence HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 185 pounder ran a 7.47-60 and was 75 across the diamond.  Works well around the bag with fluid feet and good hands.  At the plate the LHH hits from an open, crouch type setup with a smooth load.  Stride is short.  Average use of the lower half.  Hip slide.  Possesses good bat control with above average  bat speed.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 90 mph.  Line drive hitter with the ability to hit the gaps.  

Jacob Mullins, 3B, New Albany HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 165 pounder ran a 7.46-60 and was 72 across the infield.  Showcased average actions defensively with average hands.  Feet tend to be heavy and flat.  Offensively, hits from a crouch type setup with a minimal load back.  Stride is short.  Bat path is level and short.  High contact to his pull-side.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 77 off the tee. 

Camden Scheidt, 1B, Highland HS, 2021: 5-foot-10, 140 pounds, ran a 7.51-60 and was 60 across the infield.  High ¾ arm action with accuracy.  Still raw defensively.  Needs to quicken up his feet and play through the ball more.  Exchange is clean, but slow.  At the plate the LHH hits out of a balanced setup.  Back load with an arm bar.  Stride is short.  Level bat path.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 67 off the tee. 

Alex Smith, 1B, South Dearborn HS, 2017: 6-foot, 180 pounder ran a 7.58-60 and was 68 across the infield.  Short arm action from an over-the-top to high ¾ slot with some accuracy.  Average defender around the bat.  At the plate the LHH hits from a balanced setup with a back load.  Slight drop in hands during the load.  Stride is short.  Uphill swing path.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 77 mph.   

Jacob Smith, 3B, New Palestine HS, 2017: Ran a 7.46-60 and was 73 across the diamond.  Defensively possesses average hands with heavy feet.  Exchange is clean.  At the plate hits from a slight crouch setup with a small load back.  Stride is short.  Bat speed is average with an overall good approach to the baseball.  Short path with some pull-side pop.  Line drive type hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 82 mph off the tee.  

Luke Smoot, 3B, Mt. Vernon HS, 2017: 6-foot, 160 pounds, ran a 7.58-60 and was 71 across the diamond.  Average feet defensively.  Quick exchange.  Tendency to field the ball deep.  At the plate hits from a balanced, crouch type setup and loads back.  Stride is long from a toe-tap.  Show  a bat waggle.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 71 mph.  

Hayden Wynja, 1B, Heritage Christian HS, 2017: Tall, lanky frame at 6-foot-6, 170 pounds.  Ran a 7.64-60 and was 79 across the diamond.  Offensively, hits from an open, crouch type setup.  Stride is short.  Over rotates the lower half.  Displays good balance.  Average bat speed with an uphill swing plane.  Line drive hitter.  Choppy rhythm.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 87 mph.
