"We're very happy with this recruiting class. Our program was in a rebuild phase this past year and this recruiting class will arrive on campus with performance expectations. To meet those expectations we had to get talented as well as polished recruits to fulfill roles on a team that will be expected to perform and win games, and I'm thrilled to state that our staff accomplished that goal." - Bobby Pierce (Head Coach, Fort Wayne)
Head coach Bobby Pierce and staff landed four arms ranked inside the Top 100 of the Indiana class of 2018 rankings. The highest ranked prospect heading to Fort Wayne is University HS right-hander Garrett Hill, ranked No. 33. Hill in an athletic 6-feet, 170 pounder with a fastball up to 91. Scouting Report
6/13/17: Top ranked uncommitted 2018 right-handed pitcher. 6-foot, 170 pound right-hander sat 85-86, touching 89 with the fastball in his inning of work. Continues to showcase a short, loose arm and a quick wrist. Lanky, athletic frame. Still expecting to see a velocity jump as he fills in physically. Breaking ball is loopy with depth. Inconsistent command on the breaking ball. Potential out pitch for him. Works at a deliberate pace with fluidity in delivery. High follow in 2018 class.
2/19/17: Hill is a wiry, elastic 6-foot, 170-pound right-hander with a quick arm. Working through a simple motion, Hill slows down at his balance point before driving out down the mound and delivering out of a high to ¾ arm slot with some effort out front. He ran his fastball up to 89 mph (with more to come) showing run. He features a curveball that he throws 68-69 that shows 11/5 spin with gradual, multi-plane break. He tends to drop his elbow and get around the pitch. Also flashed a power changeup (81-83) that shows a bit of fading action, but can be thrown hard.
GAME NOTES 9/22/16: The 6-foot-0, 155 pound right-hander has a short arm circle with whip like action. Has a quick tempo with some rhythm. Command is much improved. Showcased some feel for change-up on his arm side. Breaking ball has sharp break with ability to be a swing and miss pitch. Hill has been seen up to 88, but sits more 83-86 with the fastball.
