Prep Baseball Report

2019 PBR Nevada 1st Team All State

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

The Nevada 2019 Prep Baseball Report First Team All-State squad features a talented group of prospects that helped their respective teams to successful seasons. Our All-State teams pull from the entire state, all classifications.

The players below, we believed, were the most dominant at their respective positions. Some positions were more loaded than others, especially middle infielders and pitchers this year. We took into account several different metrics: overall performance, statistics, impact to their respective teams and strength of schedule/competition.

The All-State teams are geared more towards statistical performance, otherwise they’d just be a direct reflection of our PBR Player Rankings, which rank players on pure ability/prospect status only. We’ve also strongly considered the defensive play of several players, something that gets thrown out the window at times during all-area or all-conference debates.

Without further ado, a look at the 2019 First Team All-State selections

Pitchers

Josh Sharman LHP / Desert Oasis / 2019

POS IP W/L H K BB ERA WHIP
LHP  72.1 12-0 45 69 28 1.06 1.01

Sturdy, 6-foot 180, Sharman maintains present strength and endurance. He pitches from a high ¾ slot with a fastball that ranged, 83-86. His fastball had late tight action away from right handed hitters.  He will raise his slot ever so slightly to get inside his fastball a bit more and create more run. He threw his breaking ball 74-76 with various action. At times, it showed cut like life, while other instances more of a slider action. He has a truer curveball 67-72 with good depth. His changeup was 75-76 with consistent fade on his arm side.  He displayed athleticism fielding bunts and picking guys.  Sharman is a pitcher and to this point pitched in all the big games and came on in relief to secure the state championship

Caedon Kottinger RHP / Reno / 2020

POS IP W/L H K BB ERA WHIP
RHP  64.1 9-1 70 69 7 2.71 1.20

A developing, 6-0, 160, Kottinger has an athletic build, sloped shoulders with room for weight and strength increases. On the mound, Kottinger is a three pitch mix type who repeats his delivery. He utilizes a high leg lift and at balance point has a little backward tilt.  He drifts a bit but has solid area control.  He commands his fastball to both sides of the plate and shows occasional arm side life, mostly 82-85.  His curve ball has tight spin with consistent depth and flashes bite, 67-72.  Kottinger displays good feel for changeup with sink, 72-74.  Velocity increases will yield a rotational starter at the next level, command over stuff presently.

Michael Rice RHP / Faith Lutheran / 2020

POS IP W/L H K BB ERA WHIP
RHP  50.2 5-3 39 56 12 1.66 1.007

UC Santa Barbara commit.Physical, 6-foot-2, 180. Rice has an athletic build with natural strength. His frame will hold additional weight. Rice has an intriguing combination of crude athleticism and strength. He has a chance to be a two-way performer for someone. He has a good arm and solid zone feel. At 86-88, easy to see the velocity playing up in a game situation. An upright short strider with short arm swing, there is some effort in his delivery. He pounded the strike zone with both his fastball and a slurvy breaking ball. All things considered, he may find himself in a relief role down the line.

Bryce Robison RHP / Palo Verde / 2019

POS IP W/L H K BB ERA WHIP
RHP  51.1 7-1 39 59 14 2.05 0.962

BYU commit. Athletic, 6-foot-1, 180, Robison is a 3-pitch mix right-hander with solid zone feel. He threw from a high ¾ arm slot with an upright delivery and a short stride. He threw his fastball that ranged 85-89, pitching comfortably 86-88.  His fastball showed occasional sink when down in the zone. Robison used his off speed early and often. His curveball, 74-76, had mostly slurvy action with flashes of late bite and occasional depth. He relied heavily on the breaking balls late lateral movement. Robison displayed good feel for his changeup, maintaining arm speed and sink down in the zone.  He is a good athlete off the mound on picks and coverages. With weight and strength gains, Robison should see some velocity gains but his ability to throw strikes and compete will provide mound time straight away.

Brian Baker 3B / Galena / 2019

POS IP W/L H K BB ERA WHIP
RHP  52 6-4 21 81 29 2.28 1.365

Large frame, 6-foot-3, 210, Baker is a physical body. He displays a deliberate, slightly cross body delivery.  He relies heavily on his strength over arm speed with a compact arm swing and loose finish out front. His fastball was up to 89, consistently 84-87.  He maintains some natural cut to his fastball on his glove side. His curveball ranged 72-78 with mostly cut action and occasional depth.  He threw a firm changeup 76-77. Baker’s physicality accompanied by velocity improvement provides for a higher ceiling and he has the makings of an out pitch.

Catcher

Josiah Cromwick C / Palo Verde / 2020

AVE 2B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG % OPS SB'S
.465 7 12 43 39 36 .500 .910 1.411 9

Uncommitted, physical 6-foot-2 190, Cromwick is a strong-bodied backstop with the durability for the position. He is a developing receiver with block and recovery skills that can be honed with work. He has plenty of arm strength for the position with a longer arm draw out of the glove and mostly on target throws. At the plate, He has a good combination of strength and bat speed that lends to projectable power to all fields. With 12 home runs this spring, he displayed the ability to get to his power in game and will not be uncommitted much longer.

first baseman

Rylan Charles OF / Bishop Manogue Catholic  / 2020

AVG 2B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG % OPS SB'S
.527 16 7 47 35 12 .568 1.066 1.634 3

Strong, 5-foot-11 185, Charles is well proportioned with present strength.  He has solid infield actions with a feel for footwork around the first base bag. He displayed pick skills during the course of the game, picking the ball out of the dirt to prevent errant throws.  His arm strength will play at first as well as in the outfield. At the plate he sets balanced and maintains it throughout his swing. Charles has a solid combination of strength and bat speed. His ability to adjust in his lower half to off speed pitches appears slightly hampered by the present flexibility of the aforementioned injured knee. Charles is a reliable defender whose bat will carry and give him a chance to be a middle of the order type at the next level.

middle infielders

Peyton Cole SS / Palo Verde / 2019

AVG 2B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG % OPS SB'S
.463 11 6 34 46 23 .563 .894 1.458 9

Brigham Young commit, 6-foot-2, 175. Cole has a projectable body with wide shoulders on an evenly proportioned frame. Weight and strength gains are imminent. He has good infield actions with solid footwork.  Cole has solid carry on his throws with enough present arm strength and more to come.  Limited looks did not provide an opportunity to see multiple angle throws or feel for touch throws but with his athleticism they should not be an issue.  At the plate, he is an aggressive hitter with present gap power and natural loft.

Joshua Rolling SS / Bishop Manogue Catholic / 2019

AVG 2B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG % OPS
.364 12 7 39 36 17 .434 .686 1.120

UNLV commit. Projectable, 6-foot-2 170, Rolling has an athletic build with sloped shoulders and plenty of room for weight and strength gains. Growth and development will likely push him to corner infield or corner outfield.  He has solid infield actions and loose arm action provides carry across the diamond. He is a better underway runner. At the plate, he maintains a manageable length to a slightly uphill swing with projectable power.

Garrett Cutting SS / Arbor View / 2021

AVG 2B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG % OPS SB'S
.495 12 6 39 30 10 .602 .823 1.425 9

Athletic, 5-foot-11, 165, Cutting has an athletic build with wiry strength. He has good infield actions and rhythm on ground balls with a live arm. He maintains the speed, agility and range to stay at the position long term, posting a 6.9 60 time. He changes his arm angles as plays dictate and shows some feel for touch throws.  He showed a high level of athleticism turning double plays and making plays on the move.  Cutting showed the ability to turn double plays from the right side of the bag as well. At the plate, Cutting maintains good balance throughout his swing. He utilizes mostly an up and down stride with a quick, whippy bat and good barrel release.  He made consistent loud contact with some projectable power in a mostly pull side approach.  Cutting is a legit two way player

third baseman

Kyle Turner 3B / Basic / 2019

AVG 2B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG  OPS SB
.435 12 4 34 42 8 .475 .661 1.136 5

Stocky, 5-foot-9 170, Turner is a reliable third baseman with solid actions. Likely suited to play second base at the next level, his true arm strength will lend better to the throws required of a second baseman.  At the plate, he has good barrel feel with a short compact swing and the ability to use all fields. He will adjust with two strikes, making him a tough out.

outfielders

Paul Vossen OF / Bishop Manogue / 2019

AVG 2B 3B HR RBI   R BB OBP SLG % OPS SB'S
.457 5 9 2 30   50 12 .503 .682 1.186 19

5-foot-8, Small frame with wiry strength. Vossen posted an event best 6.54 60 yard dash.  His speed carries huge value in the outfield as he tracks the ball well, taking great pride in his ability to take away hits.  He has a twitchy swing with his hands dropping slightly into his launch position.  He strides to a heavy front foot, staying on his backside and relying heavily on his quick hands to whip the bat through the zone.  Since his last event, Vossen’s has flattened his swing. He has a lot of tools and with work and guidance has a chance to be a legitimate top of the order type bat.  His intensity and unwillingness to accept anything less than success will ultimately propel him forward and make him an attribute to any program.

Campbell Holt LHP / Desert Oasis, NV / 2019

AVG 2B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG OPS SB POS IP W/L H K BB ERA WHIP
.415 8 2 37 35 13 .462 .615 1.091 5 LHP 43.1  6-1  37    29  4.04  1.52

A Southern California commit. Lanky, 6-foot-3 175, Holt is a projectable two way player at the next level.  He maintains a high level of athleticism and is an above average runner underway with long, easy strides. At the plate, he is an aggressive swinger with pull side power, but will adjust and go the other way with two strikes.  He displays a flat contact type swing but will get "loose" in leverage counts or if pitched to in patterns. Although, he is likely a left-handed pitcher at the next level.  His fastball ranges 84-88, touching 90.  He has a sweeping breaking ball and a changeup with arm side life. He pitches with life over plane and his athleticism and competitiveness should earn him the chance to be a potential two-way starter in college.

Austin Kryszczuk OF / Centennial / 2019

AVG 2B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG % OPS SB'S
.436 7 8 41 35 23 .530 .780 1.310 5

Sturdy, 5-foot-11 190, Krysczczuk has present strength. He profiles as an everyday corner outfielder with reliable outfield actions, catching what he gets to.  He displays a quick transition with accurate throws. He has a good combination of strength and bat speed.  Kryszczuk maintains a short, compact swing and gets to the inside fastball well. He looks to pull but will adjust with two strikes and use the whole field.

utility

Aaron Roberts RHP / Desert Oasis / 2019

AVG 2B HR RBI R BB OBP SLG  OPS SB POS IP W/L H K BB ERA WHIP
.444 15 13 58 48 39 ..583 .923 1.506 2
RHP 43 6-2  18  84  32  1.95  1.16

California commit. Strong, 6-foot-2, 210. Roberts has a wide frame with present strength. He proved a reliable third baseman as well as first baseman, moving between each position regularly early in the season.  A regular on the mound, the delivery was a bit unorthodox with some drop and drive action in the lower half to accompany the shoulder tilt while getting out over his front side with solid extension.  Midway through the season, Roberts overhauled his delivery to the betterment of his control. The fastball ranged 89-96. The breaking ball has good shape but he has some tendency to overthrow it, 72-78. He showed feel for a changeup as well but pitched primarily with his fastball, overmatching most opposing hitters.
