Game 3 REcap

VS PBR California

Heading into the final day of action at the Future Games, the Pacific Northwest squad faced arguably their toughest test as they squared up against a loaded California squad.

As we got to the 3rd game in our schedule, the pitching rotation had come full circle and we were back to the arms we saw in Game 1. This time, pitchers who appeared for 1 inning were going to double up their workload to 2 innings. At the same time, pitchers who had multiple innings in G1 would bounce back to finish with 1 strong inning.

‘23 RHP Brady Foster (O’Dea) got things started and continued his big weekend. He didn’t quite get back up to the 90 mph we saw in G1 but he showed poise early on as he was forced to pitch out of multiple jams. The FB was consistently 85-86 across both innings, showing the ability to hold velo and help build a starter profile for himself. He went to his CB early on to grab get ahead strikes and it should be a reliable secondary pitch moving forward for him. Expect Foster to be a big riser in our updated 2023 rankings coming out later this summer

‘23 LHP Miles Gosztola (West Seattle) followed up with another scoreless appearance of his own, this time for 2 complete innings. The lanky lefty continued to attack with his FB, getting up to 85 and showing a willingness to work both sides of the plate. He knows how to get the most out of what he has on a given day. There’s a noticeable competitiveness from Gosztola when he’s on the bump and he’s established himself as one of the best remaining uncommitted arms in the state.

‘23 RHP Terry Hayes Jr (Liberty) is another arm that really fits the mold of a prospect who can make a big jump quickly. A fluid, easy mover down the mound. His lean, slender frame gives you major projection to dream on and his build is capable of handling much more weight. Currently the FB resides in the 82-85 range with easy effort. On this look Hayes had the maturity to go to his CB/CH in big spots from the stretch. If he stays committed to that approach on the bump, he’ll be an even tougher match-up for hitters as the velo continues to climb.

‘23 LHP Luke Sketchley (Chief Sealth) not only handled 1B duties for the duration of the event but it put together 2 strong relief appearances without allowing a run. The strong bodied lefty showed consistent command throughout the event. Attacking with a heavy FB at 80-83 from a lower ¾ slot. He landed his sweeping breaking ball for strikes while working with a ‘no nonsense’ pace on the bump.

Lastly, ‘23 RHP Buddy Brands (Tigard) put an exclamation mark on his Future Games with a quick 1-2-3 inning to seal a 3-3 tie with California. After punching out 4 in 2 innings during G1, Brands was all over the zone early with his FB/SL combo and retired all 3 batters on less than 10 pitches. It was a highly effective ending to a terrific showing for the polished righty.

Offensively, it was tough to generate a lot of offense against some advanced arms from the California squad.

Leading the way again with the bats was the pair of 2024 catching prospects Nathan Woodside (Woodinville) and Luke Klooster (O’Dea). The duo combined for 4 hits in the game with Woodside bringing home the first run of the game on an RBI single to score Brands.

Later on, ‘24 INF Tyler Jones (Woodinville) would help push across another run with a big QAB as he brought home the runner from 3rd with less than 2 outs and in a 2 strike count. Jones shook off a slow start at the plate and really dialed in his approach and showed improved confidence at the plate with the more ABs he got.

To finish things up, Klooster got on-base again late and came home to score in the top half of the 7th to knot things up at 3-3. With the format of the Future Games, the score would hold there as we don’t go to extra innings.

In conclusion, the Pacific Northwest had an ‘undefeated’ showing in their 3 games. With 2 ties and a win, it was a gritty, competitive effort from a group of players who have faced some major obstacles in the last few years.

Next summer in 2022, the Future Games roster will consist of uncommitted players from the 2024 and 2025 class.
