2022 Spring Team Preview: Scarborough
SCARBOROUGH, Me. - A first-round loss in the playoffs brought an end to a 14-3 season at Scarborough in Wes Ridlon’s initial year at the helm.
The second-year head coach is looking for more success in 2022 at a program that won the Class A state championship in 2019.
“Pitching, defense and team speed are our strengths,” noted Ridlon, who pointed to pitching and defense as the keys to making a strong run at another state title this year.
Replacing three key components from last season’s squad is the challenge ahead for the Red Storm, which lost pitcher/third baseman Joe Townsend, outfielder Peter O’Brien and pitcher Ryan Gamberdella to graduation. Townsend is now playing at Southern Maine Community College and O’Brien at St. Joseph’s College.
Four returnees bring optimism to Scarborough this season, including a pair of commits to play at the next level. TJ Liponis, an Endicott College recruit, is back at shortstop with Ben Seguin, a St. Joseph’s College commit, bringing experience in the outfield and on the mound.
Senior Thomas Donahue returns to help in the outfield with sophomore pitcher Harrison Griffiths expected to contribute again in the rotation after being one of the top pitchers as a freshman on a team that had its best regular season since 2013, with both losses coming to Thornton Academy.
“I really like our pitching depth, player versatility on defense and our team speed,” Ridlon explained.
