2023 MHSAA Tournament: Division 4 State Semifinal - Plymouth Christian vs Rudyard

EAST LANSING - Plymouth Christian scored one run in the first and two in the second inning and went on to pull away from Rudyard for an 8-0 win in the Division 4 state semifinals on Friday night.

The victory moves the Eagles, playing in their first Final Four in school history, into the D-4 title game on Saturday at 5 p.m. against Beal City, which defeated Hackett Catholic by an identical 8-0 score.

Jordan Scott threw a shutout for Plymouth Christian, recording five strikeouts and not permitting a free pass in moving to 12-2 on the season.

Scott also put the Eagles on top to stay in the first on a two-out triple to bring home Noah Etnyre who reached on a walk.

Three errors proved costly for Rudyard in a two-run Plymouth Christian second and the fifth-rated team in the state in D-4 put the game away in the fourth with four runs on four hits and another Rudyard miscue. Etnyre led off the frame with a double and eventually came home on a passed ball. Bradyn White hit an RBI single to plate Micah Lavigne, who also had a base hit, and Luke Janigian capped off the frame with a two-out single to center for two runs.

Tyler Scott had a run-scoring double in the sixth for Plymouth Christian, which finished with 10 hits, three by Lavigne.

Rudyard left runners on base in five of the seven innings, including a base runner reaching third in the first, third and fifth frames.

Losing pitcher Aiden Bickel had two hits for the Eagles, playing in the Final Four for the first time ever.

Lavigne hit two singles and a double to pace a 10-hit attack by Plymouth Christian, which beat defending state champion Gabriel Richard 9-2 in the regionals and now has posted three shutouts in the postseason.
