Ability To Get Outs Attracts Good To Bowling Green
GROSSE POINTE FARMS - Division I college looks were in the beginning stage when COVID-19 hit.
“The coronavirus stopped that,” Nic Good said about college interest. “But then out of the blue a bunch of schools I’d not heard from started talking to me.”
It did not take long for the 67th-rated 2021 in Michigan to make a connection.
“I didn’t start talking with coach (Kyle) Hallock until a few weeks ago,” Good said in reference to the first-year head mentor at Bowling Green. “He said they were watching me for three years now. He offered me the second time we talked.”
The 5-11 180-pound southpaw impressed the former BG pitching coach.
“He watched virtually this summer,” Good related. “He said he saw I knew how to get kids out. He said I was a smart pitcher that knew how to set batters up and work my offspeed in.”
An unofficial visit to the Mid-American Conference school took place after the offer.
“It was a really, really nice campus,” Good noted. “They have a good business school which is what I want to go into and it’s only an hour-and-a-half away. That allows my family to come to my home games and, playing in the MAC, they can also come to games at Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan.”
His future head coach has plenty of experience in the league.
“He was a left-handed pitcher playing in the MAC and had a lot of success,” Good said of Hallock, who earned All-American and MAC Pitcher of the Year honors during his four-year career at Kent State. “Hopefully, I’ll learn from him and get a shot right off the bat.”
There has been a lot of recent improvement for the Grosse Pointe North left-handed pitcher.
“I started to gain a lot more velo this year so I’m able to use my offspeed more effectively,” Good pointed out. “I have a really, really slow curve I mix in.”
Playing on a different summer team was also beneficial in making strides on the diamond according to Good.
“Playing on the DBacks this year was a good choice,” the 17-year-old noted. “It gave me a feel of what college will be like and strengthened my game, too.”
More work is ahead.
“I want to gain a little more velo, get to the low-90s,” Good explained. “If I’m there, coach Hallock thinks I can be an impact right off the bat. If I get my slider down I can also be much more effective.”
The desire to play at the next level has been around for some time.
“I’ve always known I kind of wanted to play in college,” Good related. “When I was a freshman I started to get some looks, but most of my looks came this year. Where I thought I’d develop the most and progress the most was BG. I felt it was the best fit for me.”
A number of people have been vital in helping Good on his baseball journey.
“My family for sure,” pointed out Good, a 3.4 student at Grosse Pointe North. “They’ve supported me all the way. All my past coaches supported me as well and pushed me to work hard. The coaches with the DBacks have also been huge factors in making this decision. Past teammates, too, who helped me along the way.”
An offer from Oakland and interest from most MAC schools, in particular Western and Central, along with Michigan took place throughout the recruiting process.
“It wasn’t exactly how I thought it would be,” Good said of his recruitment. “I thought I would communicate with more colleges and thought there would be a lot more steps and I’d go on visits with coaches. But with covid it really made a difference in the recruiting process.”
A commitment to Bowling Green has Good less stressed out and feeling fine about the future.
“It definitely took a lot off my shoulders,” Good said. “I’ve always had fun when I played and now that I know where I’m going to college I can play with a lot more ease. I’ll have a lot more fun playing.”
