All State Games - Upperclass Infield Analysis

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

HENDERSON, NV – PBR Nevada knew that the All State Games (ASG) infielders would be in sure demand. On the eve of the ASG, ‘20, Bradley Stone, committed to the UNLV and before the ink had dried on our infield analysis, ASG standout, ‘21, Garret Cutting committed to the University of Oregon. It won’t be long before a few more of the participants are spoken for. Let’s take a look at all the infield participants at the 2019 All State Games.

2020, Layne Adaro SS/2B (Las Vegas HS) Uncommitted 5-foot-7 140.  Adaro has smaller athletic frame, with some wiry strength. He ran a 7.19 60-yard dash. Has quick feet, strong first step and is a threat on the base paths. He had two solid rounds of batting practice, flashing a middle to pull side approach. He kept the barrel through the zone, making consistent contact with a compact line drive swing. He has capable arm strength relying on his footwork and momentum to create carry across the diamond. He is likely more suited to second base at the next level, but don’t sell him short for he makes all the plays. He has a feel for staying rhythm on the different ground balls and deserves multiple looks to truly appreciate his capabilities. Great pick up for a two year institution, providing him time to realize strength increases.

2020, Bradley Stone, 2B/SS (Arbor View) Recent UNLV commit 6-foot 170. Stone has an athletic build with a medium frame and present strength. He is a solid runner and better underway, seen stretching a hit to a triple. His strength and bat speed can be seen in his 91 MPH exit velocity.  Stone had two of the better rounds on the day as he displayed a mostly pull side approach. He has a classic lefthanded swing, very balanced and made consistent contact. He recorded 2 hits during the in-game, tripling off a 91 MPH fastball. Stone has playable arm strength with solid carry.  He made good reads off the bat, funneling the ball. He showed solid footwork and clean exchanges. Likely an offensive second baseman with some low-end value in multiple position utility, but his bat will find a position.

2020, Everett Williams 3B/RHP (Damonte Ranch) Uncommitted 6-foot 180. Williams has a medium to large frame, with a strong lower half. Williams posted one of the better all-around performances of the day. Defensively, he made all the plays, including a nice over the shoulder catch in the game. He took a mature round of batting practice with consistent hard contact in a mostly pulls side approach, but on occasion displayed an ability to drive the ball the other way. He recorded three hits and used the whole field in the game. He showed a capable arm with a high level of accuracy. Williams has tremendous makeup and playability that will provide an ability to stay at 3B and be a middle of the order bat.  There is not a lot of flash to his game, more of a blue collar ‘get it done” type and surprised by his availability, but he won’t be available long.

2020, Joshua Rogers 1B/3B (Liberty HS) Uncommitted 6-foot-3 170. Rogers has a large projectable frame with long levers. He sets in the box with a significant crouch and tends to come out of his legs at contact. His ability to stay in his legs or move to a taller more leverage approach makes it easy to see future power. He took solid rounds of batting practice with consistent quality contact. He posted an 89 MPH exit velocity off the tee. Defensively, he has instincts for the first base position and provides a big target for fellow infielders.  He showed some nimbleness in his footwork around the base and feel for short/long hop picks. He had a solid arm, fielding the ball smoothly, making accurate throws. Rogers is a player to keep an eye on as he continues to add weight and strength to his frame.  He will be a nice addition for a program looking for future power and wiling to play the long game.

2021, Tucker Berg 2B/3B (Centennial HS) Uncommitted 5-foot-11 160. Berg has a medium frame with long legs and room for weight and strength gains. Not indicative of his 60-yard time, he ranged to make plays to his right and left at second base. He has a developing arm strength that is playable at the position, but improvement will be paramount to providing a future on the left side of the diamond.  He took solid rounds of batting practice with mostly pull side contact but showed a willingness to go the other way in game. He was comfortable hitting deep in counts and could stand to be more aggressive early. He has a good feel for the barrel with plate discipline that makes him a tough out. He has solid infield actions but constantly fights to stay in rhythm with a youthful body control. Look for actions to polish as weight and strength gains match growth. He plays hard with good energy.

2021, Garret Cutting SS (Arbor View) 5-foot-11 175. The recent Oregon commit, Cutting has a medium frame with room for weight and strength gains. He posted a crisp a laser timed 60-yard dash of 6.86 seconds, third fastest of the day. He has quick feet with a medium stride and is a potential threat on the base paths. He recorded an exit velocity of 91 MPH. Cutting had one of the better rounds on the day as he spayed the ball all over the field, Flashing a compact swing with a gap-to-gap approach. Made loud contact, keeping barrel through the zone, flashing signs of future power. He took the first pitch in his first at-bat and put it over the score board in left field. Cutting has good arm strength with a positional velocity of 87 MPH across the diamond. He has good actions with a tendency to rely heavily on his arm strength over footwork. He made solid reads off the bat, exemplified by a making a play on the run, up the middle. He has all the making of an everyday shortstop, top of the order type bat at the next level. Oregon got themselves a good one.

2021, Austin Cates 3B (Coronado) Uncommitted 6-foot 205, Cates has a large, wide frame with a strong lower half and present strength. With changes in body composition, he may be able to offer some utility at third base, but Cates is better suited to first base play at the next level. He has solid defensive actions with playable arm strength, but lack of true speed will limit range at third. During batting practice, he maintained mostly a pull side approach with flashes of power, making consistent contact. In game, he was aggressive at the plate and took confident swings. He definitely feels at home in the box. Defensively, he made good showed good reads off the bat and worked to stay in rhythm on ground balls.

2021, Christopher Cascardo 1B (Coronado) Uncommitted 6-foot 185. Cascardo has a medium to large frame with strength in his lower half. Speed is not on his side, but his bat will carry him. He displayed a tight range of exit velocity, culminating in a personal best 87 MPH off the tee.  He made consistent hard contact during two rounds of batting practice with signs of pull side power. Cascardo displayed instincts for the first base position in his footwork and picks skills. He showed a feel for touch throws on first base coverages and double play feeds with developing arm strength. Continued arm strength will prove valuable in starting double plays and cuts/relays. He showed solid in-game playability that will benefit from continued changes brought on by natural maturation as well as strength and conditioning training.
