Paul Panaccione
Arizona Scouting Director

PBR Arizona has been hosting events, scouting games, and gathering info from coaches as we approached this day so we could guarantee you our best effort while covering the high school season. Each week, the P25 rankings will be updated, along with: team notes, and Game of the Week coverage.

If you have any info worth sharing, please keep PBR Arizona Staff updated with video/comments. The more information we can collect from different sources the better. We are always open to your opinions and appreciate any feedback.

Team Notes

At the midway point through the 2022 season, and things are getting interesting. Last week there were some big upsets and exciting matchups across The Valley. Hamilton was handed their first loss to an Arizona team, as Basha beat them with a late go-ahead grand slam. Nogales remains unbeaten and moves into the #2 spot with a (15-0) record. Canyon View split a home and home series with Millennium during their rivalry matchup. Basha drops two to Brophy, but comes back with their big win against Hamilton, and added Bradyn Barnes to their pitching rotation. Sandra Day O'Connor starts to heat up with a big stretch of games ahead of them. Red Mountain is in a little rut. Alhambra record moves to (15-1). Walden Grove continues to win games and their record is at (17-1-1), but sad news for them this past week as Owen Kramkowski is likely to miss the rest of the season. Desert Mountain continues to win with Haarer and Moeller on the mound.

In this weeks P25 Rankings update, we have: a new #2 in Nogales, some more changes in the top 10, two teams drop out, and two new teams move into the top 25.

#2 Nogales (15-0)

Nogales has just been taking care of their business no matter what opponent is in front of them. The Apaches remain the only unbeaten team in the state, and are winning games in whatever type of fashion they need to, but it seems like blowing teams out is the way they like to do it. We've mentioned before, this pitching staff is for real, as they've only allowed 21 runs in their 15 games played. And not to mention they've scored 123 on the other end (differential of 121 runs). The Apaches have been playing all around great baseball, with great pitching, defense, and a scrappy offense that won't give in. Demetrio Crisantes, Sergio Valverde, and Raenon Padilla have been producing a bulk of their offense. And with a team ERA of .82, Roman Bracamonte and Saul Soto take the mound as their main guns, with much help behind them. Nogales knocked off Tucson in PBR Arizona's Game of the Week last Monday at Cherry Field, as the Apaches made their presence known not only in Tucson, but across the whole state as a team not to mess with.

Runs Scored: 123

Runs Allowed: 21

#7 Basha (13-5)

The Basha Bears were looking like they were falling into a slight rut after taking 3 straight losses last week to Brophy and Hamilton. These are good opponents, but emotional losses at this point in the season. However, Basha bounced back in a big way as they were the first team in state to steal one from Hamilton last week. This is the point of the season we had circled for Basha, as last week they gained a huge piece to their team in Bradyn Barnes. Barnes (Arizona St commit) transferred to Basha before the season, having to serve a suspension, but was cleared at a key moment in the Basha season and took the mound in the Hamilton win. Basha now has two D1 arms at the top of their rotation and look to cruise into the post season with some confidence and W's under their belt. With some solid competition ahead of them the rest of the way, Basha looks to end the season strong.

Runs Scored: 123

Runs Allowed: 69

#10 Sandra Day O'Connor (13-4)

The O'Connor Eagles got off to somewhat of a slower start than they would've imagined. But their losses came to top notch teams, and those losses to the top teams are starting to turn into wins. The Eagles are starting to heat up with wins against Basha, Liberty, and Red Mountain, with maybe the toughest stretch of their schedule in front of them. If O'Connor can get through this week with 2 or 3 wins, it will show their early season losses can be chalked up as shaking the rust off. O'Connor has 7 every day players hitting over .350, and a pitching staff that is getting the job done. Sr SP Cennedy Murrell is 4-0 with a .47 ERA, only walking 5 batters in 20 innings pitched. The Eagles are getting help from players in all classes

Runs Scored: 109

Runs Allowed: 66

#17 Brophy (12-7)

The Brophy Broncos were a team with a bunch of question marks opening the season. They started their season (4-6) through their first 10 game, and it was looking like it was at most a team that can sneak up on some opponents. Since that first 10 games, they've gone (7-1), and are currently on a 7 game win streak, taking games from: Perry, Basha, Chandler, and Desert Vista, all tough opponents. Brophy's remaining matchups are no slouch, with 5 of 6 of their remaining games being against ranked teams. The Broncos are currently (5-0) in league play and sit at the top of their region. They've been getting very quality innings out of ace pitcher James Decremer III and Stone Williamson. And their offense has been gritty and competitive from top to bottom. We've said before that good teams win the 1 run ball games, and Brophy is (4-0) in games with a margin of 1 run. Pending the Broncos success the rest of the way, this could be a sleeper team in a state playoff run.

Runs Scored: 111

Runs Allowed: 93

#24 Mesquite (13-8-1)

The Defending 4A State Champion Mesquite Wildcats started the year with a 6 game losing streak that pulled them out of the P25 rankings. Since then, the Wildcats are (12-2-1). Their two losses during that run were tight ball games that could've gone either way, and this team is showing they want to defend that title. They are a very well rounded offensive team, with 10 players hitting over .300, and a key addition to their lineup and pitching staff last week. Sr DJ Barrett (Central AZ commit) returned to their lineup after sitting out due to transfer rules. Barrett made the move from Hamilton to Mesquite, and it didn't take him long to make a splash, in his first game back he left the yard two times vs Seton Catholic. This is an upperclassmen heavy roster, with leadership and athleticism all around the diamond, and a skilled catcher behind the plate commanding their games in Tariq Freeny.

Runs Scored: 207

Runs Allowed: 120
