Arizona P25 Update: Week 2

Paul Panaccione
Arizona Scouting Director

PBR Arizona has been hosting events, scouting games, and gathering info from coaches as we approached this day so we could guarantee you our best effort while covering the high school season. Each week, the P25 rankings will be updated, along with: team notes, and Game of the Week coverage.

If you have any info worth sharing, please keep PBR Arizona Staff updated with video/comments. The more information we can collect from different sources the better. We are always open to your opinions and appreciate any feedback.

WEEK 2: TOP 25

Week 1 has come to a close, and it was an action packed week! Competition was stiff state-wide, as we saw some upsets, great pitching matchups, walk-off wins, and much more. But with a two weeks in the books, we now have a better idea of how this season may play out. We have updated the P25 rankings, and added some teams on the bubble who have been showing they should not go unnoticed.

TEAM NOTES

No changes have been made in the top 4. Those 4 teams have been consistent and played clean baseball. Showing that they have depth either on the mound, offensively, or both. They've all played high level competition, and came out on top. If Hamilton, Red Mountain, Mountain Ridge, and Tucson remain healthy, and continue to play the level of baseball they have been playing, don't expect much change at the top.

#5 Horizon (8-1)

The Horizon Huskies have moved into the top 5 in week 2's P25 update. The Huskies have a deep lineup that is upperclassmen loaded. They have strength and speed up and down the lineup, with 9 hitters that can turn in quality at bats. They have a number of hitters committed to play at the next level, and more that we are waiting to see where they end up. They are athletic around the diamond and will play solid defense behind their pitchers. If the Huskies are lacking in one area, it could be depth on the mound. But they have a quality are in LHP Grant Richardson, and are waiting on the debut of transfer RHP Jacob Anderson. When Anderson is eligible to play, this gives them two horses to make their starts, and allows their other arms to be pushed to either a game 3 starter or extends their depth in the bullpen. OF Dominic Chacon has gotten off to a blazing start to the season, hitting 6 HR in their 9 games played, and hasn't shown any sign of slowing down yet.

Runs scored: 104

Runs allowed: 22

#7 Canyon View (4-0)

The Canyon View Jaguars are an exciting team who is off to a great start. This is a very balanced group, with nothing that will really jump off the page at you, but they play together and they find a way to get in the win column. Of all their strengths, the biggest strength could be on the mound. With a handful of great starters, and great options in the bullpen, they've shown that they will hold opposing offenses down and put them in a great spot to win ball games. The Jags have won tight pitchers duels, and they've been able to slug their way to some wins as well. Good teams win 1 run ball games, and Canyon View is 2-0 in those matchups. They have a true #1 arm in RHP Connor Mattison, and he's going to bring it any chance he has to show his stuff. Look for the Jags to play hungry, and stay hot this season, as they are our #2 ranked team in the 5A Division.

Runs scored: 50

Runs allowed: 15

#10 Perry (6-0)

The Perry Pumas did not take long to make their presence known throughout the state, as they are off to a perfect start to 2022 and doing it over some quality opponents. The Pumas are doing it on both ends, as they are putting up offensive numbers, and limiting opposing teams scoring. They are being led by senior LHP and Arizona State commit Stephen Hernandez. Hernandez has already turned in a couple very quality starts on the mound, and he's doing it with the bat as well, leaving the yard 4 times already this spring. They have a great #2 on the mound in senior RHP, Utah Valley commit Stryder Salas. Hernandez and Salas could be stacked up with just about any teams 1-2 punch in the state, and this makes them a scary team to run into if their offense continues to click like it has been. Perry, in just 2 weeks, has moved from not ranked.. to in the top 10.

Runs scored: 71

Runs allowed: 17

#11 Sunrise Mountain (3-0)

The Sunrise Mountain Mustangs are the 5A Defending State Runner-Up, and have gotten off to a perfect start in 2022. In their route to a perfect start, they've topped 2 teams ranked in the top 15, including Desert Mountain, the team who knocked them off in the 2021 State Title game. This is a scrappy team, with some veteran talent and some help from younger prospects. Senior RHP, Cal Baptist commit Ryne Palmer is the ace of the staff, who has gotten off to a great start to the 2022 spring season. Reports from the coaching staff tell us that he is getting better with each outing, and we're looking forward to being in attendance for one of his outings in the near future. Senior C/SS, Oregon State commit Easton Talt is their leader offensively, off to a bit off a rocky start to his standards in the early season, but with high expectations for Talt as the season continues to move, the Mustangs are yet to reach their offensive potential as a team. Sunrise Mountain is looking to top what they did in 2021, and their moving in the right direction to achieve that goal.

Runs scored: 71

Runs allowed: 11

#23 Walden Grove (4-0)

Walden Grove makes their first appearance in the top 25 in the week 2 update, as they're off to a perfect start to the season, and putting up some great numbers while they're at it. Through the summer and fall, we saw plenty of skilled players from Walden Grove attend PBR Showcases, leading us to believe this is a group that could be making some noise in 2022. They're putting up great offensive numbers to start the season, and the pitching staff is holding opposing offenses down. Senior OF/LHP, New Mexico State commit Milo Rushford, is one of the leaders on both sides of the ball for this group. He'll be at the top of their order, and turning in some quality innings for his team. Junior RHP Owen Kramkowski is an uncommitted arm on this pitching staff that will carry a large role in this teams success, and they will get help from many other sources as well. Expect Walden Grove to keep competing as they should be in the mix as the season moves forward.
