Big Innings Propel Howard Over Marriotts Ridge

The Howard Lions took advantage of a four-run third and sixth inning to defeat the Marriotts Ridge Mustangs 9-4 in a key late season Howard County conference matchup.

The Lions did not take long to get the scoring started in this matchup, scoring the first run in the game in the bottom of the second after an RBI double from the bat of senior shortstop Craig Wiley to left center scoring Jerry O’Neil and giving Howard a 1-0 lead.

Howard would again strike in the third inning, starting off with the first two batters getting on to start the inning. Brian Jakubek would drive a double to the gap scoring one and taking a 2-0 lead. Ryan Kulick would knock in both runners extending to a 4-0 lead. Kulick would move to second on an on a pickoff, move to third on a wild pitch, and later score on another wild pitch to give Howard the 5-0 pick.

Marriotts ridge would chip away the next two innings adding a run each in the fifth and sixth and forcing Howard to go to the pen after starting pitcher Brendan Foster reached his pitch count in the fifth inning. The Mustangs would load the bases in the top of the sixth after adding a run but came away without any more runs, making the score 5-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

Howard would get another four run inning running away with the game in the process. RBI’s would come off the bats of Gabe Delgado, Jake Alagna, and Jakubek in the frame as the Lions took a 9-2 lead.

Marriotts Ridge would add two more runs in the top of the seventh with two out, but could go no further ending the game with the 9-4 final.

Foster got the win for Howard striking out 10 in 4.2 innings of work giving up a run and two hits. He walked six.

Josh Olsufka took the loss for Marriotts Ridge, giving up eight runs (five earned) off of seven hits. He struck out nine and walked two.

Jakubek led the Lions offensively going 3-for-4 with two RBI’s and two doubles. Kulick had a hit a two RBI.

Hunter Reeling, Dylan Anagnos, and Cole Brown each had two hits apiece for Marriotts Ridge. Reeling added two RBI.
