Blake Goldsberry Interview

By JEFF LETOFSKY
PBR Senior Writer

Blake Goldsberry is somewhat intimidating with his 6-foot-4  frame.

And his skill set is something to behold.

That's why he's considered one of Colorado's top high school prospects for the 2014-2015 school year.

A senior at Cherry Creek High School, Goldsberry is the son of a high school coach who had a stellar  career at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

This past summer, the younger Goldsberry put in plenty of work on the diamond playing for the Cherry Creek 18s spearheaded by legendary coach Marc Johnson, who just completed his 42nd season for the Bruins in the spring.

"A lot of games, a lot rest," Goldsberry said when asked about his summer season. "My routine is getting to the park early, get some ground balls and get into the (batting) cage."

A corner infielder (3rd base) and pitcher, Goldsberry is tall, yet somewhat light at 180 pounds. He knows he has to beef up."I'm working on getting stronger," he said."Six-foot-four and 180 pounds isn't going to cut it. I'm trying to get stronger, working in the weight room to gain some weight."

Goldsberry recently attended the Top Prospect Games at Cherry Creek High School in late July and was named as the top pitching prospect.

PBR Colorado director John Cackowski said this about Goldsberry on the mound:"His fastball velocity sat at 84-85 mph, touching 87 on occasion. His breaking ball was clocked at 68-69 with an 11/5 break. A changeup with sink was clocked between 70 and  72 mph."

With that in mind, Goldsberry defines his strengths and weaknesses as a player."Offensively, I'm more of a contact guy," he said. "I had 130 at-bats this summer and struck out only four times. I'm not a power guy, more gap-to-gap."Defensively, I mostly make the every day play and I throw strikes when I'm on the mound. I could run a little better. That hurts, but you really can't change that."

Thus far, Goldsberry is uncommitted but will likely schedule a visit to Division II Colorado Mesa University. He's already visited West Virginia and has talked to Santa Clara.

"What I want to study?" he said. "I have no clue yet."I do know I'll probably have to pick either the infield or pitching in college. But I'll do whatever a college wants me to do."
