Class 5 Region A Quarterfinal Roundup

Saturday saw the first round of the Class 5 Rgion A tournament get underway at War memorial stadium in Hampton, Va. Very exciting and close games from start to finish, we give you a short synopsis from each game.

Hickory 1, Nansemond River 0

The first matchup of the day was a very competitive pitchers duel that saw No. 1 seed Hickory's 2020 RHP Drew Stanley take on No. 8 seed Nansemond River's 2019 RHP Caleb Pritchett (Bryant & Stratton). In what was the fastest game of the day, Hickory was able to squeak out a 1-0 victory.

Hickory score the lone run of the game in the fifth inning when Cooper Newel hit a single up the middle that scored Brenden Barnes for the lone run of the game.

Stanley gave up two hits while striking out 11 and walking one in the shutout performance.

Pittman scattered three hits with five strikeouts while giving up one unearned run.

Princess Anne 7, Hampton 3

In the No. 2 v No. 7 matchup, it was the seven seed that came out on top. Behind a strong offensive attack and a masterful pitching performance from uncommitted 2020 LHP Tyler Horton, the Princess Anne Cavaliers knocked out the two seed Hampton Crabbers.

Princess Anne scored their seven runs in the third through fifth innings, and were able to hold off a late Hampton rally to take the victory. The Cavs struck in the third inning when Omar Gonzalez hit a sac fly to center that scored the games first run. Next hitter Jordan Irizarry then knocked a two-run home run to right to extend to a 3-0 lead that they would extend and not relinquish.

Horton was very impressive in this performance, shutting down the Crabber offense through five innings. Horton used a dominant fastball en route to a 12 strikeout performance. He scatterd three hits, walked two and had three HBP's. Clayton Robbins came in the seventh inning and closed the door on the game. Irizarry went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Ryan Mach was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Zack Will went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Trey Morgan led the Crabber offense going 1-for-3 with an RBI

Menchville 4, Gloucester 3

The Monarchs of Menchville were able to take a 3-1 lead after two innings breaking up a 101 tie and were able to hold off numerous Gloucester rallies to hold on and defeat the Dukes 4-3.

Anthony Hall and Dawson Guzik came up with big RBI singles in the bottom of the second that broke a 1-1 tie. Gloucester would threaten in multiple frames throughout the game, but were unable to get the big play to continue their season. They had two runners reach basee with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but Menchville turned to Phil Forbes V who was able to get the final strikeout of the game and end the Gloucester rally.

Brandon Rodgers led the Monarch offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hall also was 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI. Ahmad Goldson got the start, going 4.2 innings with nine strikeouts while alloweing five hits and four walks. Austin Maxey pitched two strong innings in relief for Menchville as well.

Blake Taylor came in relief for the Dukes in the third inning and shut down the Menchville offense with four strong innings of releif. Colton Smith went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Brendin Bard led the offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Maury 4, Salem 0

The Maury Commodores were able to score four runs in four innings with a steady offensive attack and got a strong pitching performance from Ben Capehart and a dynamite relief performance from Dalton Barham, who was able to get the save coming into the game in a tough situation and getting out perfect.

Maury scored one run in the bottom of the first from a Jacob Jackson RBI. They would add two more runs in the third loading the bags after three consecutive singles to start the inning. Gabe Mendoza had an RBI ground out and Wes Bonney hit a sac fly to knock in their other run. Jackson would add another RBI in the fourth inning.

The Salem offense was held in check for most of the game but had their biggest threat in the top fo the sixth, loading the bases with no out. Barham would come into the game at this time and proceeded to strike out the next three hitters to deflate the Sun Devils and then came back out and pitched a perfect seventh to get the big save and help the Commodores advance.

Jackson led the Maury offense, going 3-for-3 in the game with two RBI. Kennedy Jones went 2-for-3 in the game as well. Capehart got the win, scattering five hits in five inning with five strikeouts.
