College Roundup: Class of 2017 Prepares for Year Two

Year one of a player's college baseball journey often is a mixed bag with a fair share of players utilizing a red shirt year or seeing limited playing time while waiting an opportunity to display their ability to contribute.

Pennsylvania's Class of 2017 had an opportunity to get their feet wet at the next level last spring and for those in the top 10 spots in the final Pennsylvania Class of 2017 rankings it was full steam ahead. Following is a look at success of those in the top 10 during their freshman seasons.

Class of 2017: Top Ten Prospects

Chris McMahon RHP / West Chester Rustin, PA / 2017


+ 6-foot-2, 190-pound righty went 1-1 with a 4.44 ERA over 26.1 innings while making four starts for the Miami Hurricanes.

Shane Muntz C / Malvern Prep, PA / 2017


+ 6-foot-4, 225-pound two-way players hit .253 with 11 doubles, five home runs, and 29 RBI for Wake Forest. Muntz also went 1-1 on the mound making 14 appearances in relief with 12 strikeouts.

Joe Lancellotti RHP / William Penn Charter, PA / 2017


+ 5-foot-11, 205-pound righty made a whopping 28 appearances, 27 in relief, going 3-3 for North Carolina. Lancellotti registered 43 strikeouts and held opposing hitters to a .191 batting average.

Nick Stoner RHP / Elizabethtown Area, PA / 2017


+ The lone Division II player in the group had a banner year for the Bloomsburg Huskies. The 6-foot, 170-pound righty went 5-1 with a 3.83 ERA while making nine starts and held opposing hitters to a .196 batting average.

Zach McCambley RHP / Pocono Mountain East, PA / 2017


+ 6-foot-1, 205-pound Coastal Carolina righty went 3-0 with a 3.17 ERA over 48.2 innings of work that included seven games started and 11 relief appearances.

Trent Vietmeier RHP / Montour, PA / 2017


+ 6-foot-3, 217-pound righty went 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA while making 16 relief appearances for LSU. Worked 22 innings while striking out 19.

Riley Christner RHP / Meyersdale Area, PA / 2017


+ The lone player in the group to go the JUCO route. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound righty battled injuries during his freshman campaign making just one appearance for Lackawanna JC.

Kyle Virbitsky RHP / Episcopal Academy, PA / 2017


+ 6-foot-6, 235-pound righty went 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA for Penn State. Virbitsky worked 21.2 innings over 15 appearances that included one start.

Zach Kokoska OF / Greater Latrobe, PA / 2017


+ 6-foot-2, 200-pound two-way player appeared in 14 games as a freshman at Virginia Tech. Kokaska has transferred to Kansas State for his sophomore season.

Alexander Tappen 3B / Wissahickon, PA / 2017


+ 6-foot-2, 190-pound infielder hit .262 with four home runs and 36 RBI while appearing in 54 games for Virginia as a freshman.
