Commitment Spotlight: Teagan Carey

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

Today, we caught up with 2021 SS Teagan Carey from Chaparral HS. Carey committed to University of Oregon back at the end of September. He took some time to answer some questions for us today about his college recruiting experience.

Carey is currently the No.10 ranked player in the class of 2021 in the state of Arizona; he's the No. 3 ranked shortstop. Carey has been on the rise since last summer as you can see from his recent Progress Report. He's really taken the time during this shutdown to hit the weight room.

Take a look at what Teagan Carey said about his college recruiting experience:

Scouting Report

6/12/19

6’ 170 -pound frame with broad shoulders. Looks more physical than January event. Starts with feet outside shoulders, rocking into back side to load. Small stride forward to stay square. Middle approach, driving the ball gap to gap. Noticeably more bat speed with exit velo at 91 MPH. Good actions in the field with the ability to stay at SS. Arm strength at 85 across the diamond plays well from different angles needed, based on throws he makes. Footwork allows to work good hops and be in position to get rid of the ball as needed. 7.12 60.

1/27/19 – Uncommitted. 5’11 165-pound frame with broad shoulder and room for weight. Starts with a square, wide stance, using little weight shirt into back side and small stride to unload lower half. Hands work back, just off shoulder as body starts forward. Has enough athleticism and body control to add more movement and create more from body. Middle approach, that will hit for power as strength develops (83 MPH exit velo). Good internal clock, doesn’t rush. Brings ball to center after catch for balance and arm swing. Works to hops well, although can use momentum better to work through the baseball and to add playable arm strength. Arm is at 83 MPH across the infield with good carry. Arm works well with multiple arm slots. Has a chance to stick at SS long term.

PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?

Carey: I chose The University of Oregon for a couple of reasons. I really liked the coaching staff and how it felt like a family between all of the players and coaches. When I went on my unofficial, I fell in love with the atmosphere and the campus which is when I knew that I wanted to be a Duck.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Carey: I had a couple of other schools I was considering.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?

Carey: I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure they first saw me in Georgia at the PBR Futures Games. I know they had been to some of my tournaments in the past but Georgia is where they really started to recruit me.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?

Carey: Of course, it is relieving knowing that I found the right school for me and that I have a plan for my future. However, I am nowhere near where I want to be so I have a ton of work to do to get there. I hope we can get back to baseball soon.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?

Carey: The deciding factor that put me over the top would probably have to be the coaching staff.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?

Carey: My dad has always helped me and been a huge inspiration for me. Rex Gonzales, my club ball coach, has also helped me a lot with preparation and teaching me the right way to play.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?

Carey: I always knew the recruiting process is a grind from people I have talked to in the past. But honestly it is all worth it in the end.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?

Carey: I don’t know their plans for me for the freshman season. All I know is I’m going to prepare, prepare, and prepare to go into Oregon and fight for a starting job. Just like any other player should.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

Carey: My most memorable baseball moment to date is either committing to Oregon or getting to go to Jupiter last year with the D-Backs.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?

Carey: Blaze Jordan, he grounded out to me in Jupiter.
