Daily Game Round Up-March 30



In the featured game of the day, St. Louis University High defeated Webster Groves 10-0 in six innings on the front end of a double header. Brian Howard improved his record to 2-0 with four innings of one-hit ball. He used a combination of an 86-88 mph fastball combined with effective use of his change up and slider to stifle the opposing hitters.

SLUH scored three runs their second time though the line up in the third inning. Leadoff hitter Matt Binz led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Clohisy. A single by Kaleb King drove home Binz. After stealing second, King came around to score after Charlie Kretchmer reached on an error. Pinch runner Joe Delsignore scored from first on a couple of throwing errors after stealing second, putting SLUH up 3-0. 

SLUH picked up four more runs in the fourth. Binz once again started off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk to Clohisy. A double by King drove home Binz; and Kretchmer came through again with a two RBI single scoring Clohisy and King. 

SLUH put the game away in the fifth inning, scoring three more runs. Charlie Nestor reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a walk to Binz. Clohisy singled, bringing home Nestor, and King followed with a two RBI single, putting SLUH up 10-0 and ending the game. Pinch runner Delsignore scored the fourth run of the inning on an RBI single by JJ Guenther. 

The first four hitters for SLUH combined for seven RBIs, eight hits, nine runs scored; led by Kaleb King’s three hits and four RBIs 

In the second game of the double header, Andrew Quinn picked up the win on the mound going four innings, scattering two hits and striking out five as SLUH defeats Webster Groves 4-3.

 

In Midwest Classic Tournament Action:
No. 1 Francis Howell 9                  No. 12 Lee’s Summit West 5
Francis Howell advanced to the semi-finals with a 9-5 win over Lee’s Summit West. Nate Green hit his second homerun in as many days, a three run shot in the bottom of the second inning that put Howell up 6-0. Nic Perkins went 2-for-3, driving in a pair of runs and Jake Hellweg also collected a pair of RBIs to lead the Howell offense.  Calvin Munson picked up the win, going six innings and allowing five hits and striking out five.

Francis Howell won their second game of the day, defeating the defending Class 4 state champions Rockwood Summit and advancing to the championship game of the Midwest Classic, which would be cancelled due to rain. 

Austin Southmayd puzzled the Rockwood Summit batters, striking out nine and allowing two runs in seven innings of work. 

Rockwood Summit took a 2-0 lead in the first two innings on an RBI single by Rudy May, scoring Jared Corbett in the first and Nick Miller single allowing Tim Larrigan to cross the plate. That is all Summit could muster. 

Francis Howell tied the score in the bottom half of the second. Nate Green led the inning off with a double to centerfield and came around to score on a Calvin Munson ground out.  The next batter, Mitch Larkin doubled to right field and came around when the next batter, Erik Heunke doubled. 

Francis Howell took the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Heunke, scoring Elijah Dilday

After leading the fifth inning off with as double and advancing to third on a fielder’s choice ground out, Jake Hellweg scored after Elijah Dilday reached on an error, putting Howell up 4-2.

Westminster advances to the semi-finals of the Midwest Classic, winning their 35th consecutive game.

Hickman put an end to Westminster’s 35 game win streak, advancing to the championship game of the Midwest Classic, in a rain shortened game. 

In other Top 25 action:
No. 21 Logan Rogersville 8                Parkview 7
After seven lead changes, Logan Rogersville pulled out an 8-7 win in the Willard Lead Off Tournament. Evan Gruener led the Rogersville offense going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Dayton Karr, Josh King, and Tad Mitchell also drove in runs for Rogersville. Connor Pomering picked up the win in relief, going three and two thirds innings giving up two hits and three runs.
