Division 2 Team Of The Week: Week 6 - John Glenn
BAY CITY - John Glenn just keeps on rolling. After picking up six victories last week, the Bobcats made a statement to start this week by sweeping Frankenmuth, 6-1 and 15-0.
Oakland commits Tanner Sonntag and Brody Krzysiak shut down the state-ranked squad for the Prep Baseball Report Division 2 Team of the Week. Sonntag, the fourth-ranked 2023 right-handed pitcher in the state, threw a three-hitter with 11 Ks in the opener before Krzysiak, the 15th-rated senior RHP in Michigan, followed it up with a two-hit eight-strikeout performance versus the eighth-rated D-2 team in the state.
Both pitchers are now 6-1 on the season with one save apiece for a John Glenn squad that has a team ERA of 1.67. Jacob Andrews is 4-0 for the Bobcats while TJ Cwiklinski adds depth with a 2-0 record for the 23-4 seventh-rated team in Division 2.
“Entering the season we felt that we had a pretty good team,” related head coach Jeff Hartt, whose Bobcats are ranked seventh in the PBR Power 25 ratings. “We made it to the quarterfinals last year and had 14 players returning. We were 30-11-1 and we only had one senior starter in 2022. The boys’ goal is to get deeper than the quarterfinals this year. Our guys have played hard all year and things are starting to come together.”
Sonntag and Krzysiak are not only shining on the mound, but are doing their part at the plate. Sonntag has a team-best .441 average with 31 RBIs while Krysiak has scored 25 runs while batting .425.
Northwood commit Nathan Ball, the top-rated senior first baseman in Michigan, has tallied a team-best 31 runs while driving in 25 and hitting .394 while Cwiklinski carries a .387 average. Lawrence Tech signee Brady Rogers adds to the offense with a .325 mark at the dish.
“Pitching and defense, along with hitting throughout the batting order are keys to success the rest of the season,” explained Hartt, whose team is in first place in the Tri-Valley Conference with a 10-2 record with games remaining against Saginaw Heritage today and Westland John Glenn on Saturday. “We are just trying to focus on one game at a time and getting better as a team every day.”
