FALL BALL NOTES - LVBA DESERT FALL CLASSIC

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

LAS VEGAS, NV – With the LVBA Desert Classic in the heat of pool play heading into Sunday’s championship round, many local area players were on hand.  The full day of baseball spread city wide represented by more than 150 teams, 9U - 18U.

In spite of being eliminated from the championship round on Saturday by the Nebraska Prospects at Arroyo Grande Park, Brett Harrison's CBA Nevada (2020) group dipslayed some standout play.  Leading the group was leftfielder, Jareyn Yamaguchi (SLAM Academy, 2020). Yamaguchi, an undersized performer, sprinted toward the fence on multiple occasions with little regard for his personal safety to make plays and hold the lead. Eventually, Yamaguchi would come up short, crashing into the fence and Nebraska would get back in the game and ultimately walk off a win to end the game.

Other notable players catching PBR Nevada's eye were Cayd Watkins, (Spring Valley, 2020) and Michael Cianci (Mojave, 2020).  Watkins a smooth, well-actioned shortstop showed solid pick skills in the middle of the diamond.  He was aggressive at the plate, revealing promising bat speed.  Catcher, Michael Cianci might have been the most intriguing of prospects.  Strong, 6-foot-0, frame with durability for the catching position, Cianci, sat well in his crouch and displayed good block and recovery skills.  At the plate, he displayed balance and plate discipline and made loud contact when he decided to swing.  The starter for the CBA sqaud, Matt Galdi (Coronado, 2020) pitched comfortably with a fastball 77-79.  He maintained a consistent down plance form an overhand slot.  He showed area control with the ability to get to his glove side with the four seam fastball.  He had an overhand breaking ball that ranged 64-66.

Later in the eveining the CBA 2019 squad would matchup with the Cascade Crush. CBA's Nathan Freimuth (Las Vegas, 2019) and Chase Rodriguez (Spring Valley, 2020) look like players to be reckoned with.  The projectable, 6-foot-2, 175, Freimuth showed solid actions at 3B and was aggressive at the plate, making consistent quality contact.  The evenly proportioned Rodriguez was smooth around the bag at first and maintained an aggressive approach at the plate with a solid combination of strength and bat speed.  Yet again, an undersized performer led the way for a CBA club.  Kaedon, Camat-Toki (Liberty, 2019) made everyone take notice.  He ranged in the outifled, running down balls and tripled to right centerfield with a hard line drive.  Cama-Toki's ability to impact a game with his speed and quickness has been well documented by PBR Nevada.
