Fall Player Spotlights: Dominic Ornelas

Prep Baseball Report Oklahoma is highlighted some of the top remaining uncommitted players in the 2023 class to a couple of the top 2025's. Today we take a look at the physical catcher from Sand Springs Dominic Ornelas. Ornelas is one of the top remaining uncommitted catchers in the State and continues to have big performances each time we see him. Dominic has some of the easiest power in the state blasting multiple homers this past spring and summer using his smooth and controlled swing. Ornelas has also improved over the years as a backstop, showing strong and accurate throws to go along with advanced receiving skills. Ornelas has done a good job of shaping up his frame adding more muscle making him an interesting prospect to keep an eye on for the next level.

Strong, physical 6-foot, 220-pound athlete that’s one of the top power bats still on the market in Oklahoma’s 2023 class. Pounded a home run on Thursday with several loud batted balls throughout the weekend to boot. Showed middle-of-the-order upside at the next level.
Body: 6-foot, 220-pound mature frame with present strength.
Hit: RHH. At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and very upright posture. Hands get set above shoulder height with a high back elbow. Short two-tap stride to a narrow base. Drifts weight into a firm front side linearly with a rotational bat path and strong top hand. Hand whip quickly through the zone and has good overall bat speed. Slight uphill bat path and tries to work the ball up in the air. Has present strength at contact with the hands.
Power: 89 mph exit velocity off the tee and 97 mph exit velocity in BP.
Arm: RH. C-76 mph. Longer arm with hand working behind the back and a shorter release.
Defense: Behind the plate prefers to receive with one knee in the dirt. Has some strength in the wrists at the frame point. Blocks from a slightly upright posture with stiffer hips. Registered pop times ranging from 1.97-2.06 with quick hips and feet working out of the crouch.
Run: 5.33 runner to first base.
