Below, we recap the player analysis for prospects in the Class of 2014 at the Final Event of the Winter at Owens Community College on February 23rd.

Top Prospect

Jacob Green, RHP, Defiance HS, 2014

5-foot-11, 145-pound athletic prospect. Obvious quickness in his arm through a high ¾ arm slot. Short arm action. Some effort to his delivery. Fastball sat at 83-85 mph with some arm side run. Showed off a hard 12/6 “Defiance” breaking ball at  70-72 mph. Pitch falls off the table. Also threw a 78-79 mph changeup that showed similar movement to his fastball.

Complete Player Analysis

Clayton Farrar, 3B, Clyde HS (OH), 2014

5-foot-10, 200-pound prospect. Corner infield type. From third base, he showed short arm action with some quickness to his transfer. Top velocity of 77 mph with accuracy. Good feel and softness with his hands. Feet work well. At the plate, he starts in an athletic stance. Short stride. Good use of strong lower half. Hands work quick through the zone. Overall fluid rhythm to his swing. Top exit velocity of 88 mph. Ran a 7.72.

Drew Johnson, OF, Trenton HS (MI), 2014

5-foot-8, 145-pound prospect with an athletic frame. Ran impressive 6.88 60. From the outfield, he reached a top velocity of 70 mph. Room to improve as he plays through the baseball and creates momentum. At the plate, he starts from a wide stance and a bit of a crouch. Upper body type hitter. Pull tendencies in his swing. Top exit velocity of 64.

Hunter Holcomb, RHP, St. Clair HS (MI), 2014

6-foot-8, 225-pound right-handed pitching prospect. Tall, lanky frame. Delivery has slow rhythm but repeatable. More to come with improved use of his lower half. Uses long arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat in the high 70’s and bumped up to 82 mph. Breaking ball sat at 67-70 mph with some sweeping action. Needs to consistently maintain arm speed. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed at 68-70 mph.

Kyle Francek, SS/RHP, Gibraltar Carlson HS (MI), 2014

5-foot-8, 135-pound prospect with thin, athletic frame. Throws through ¾ arm slot. Top velocity of 75 mph. Tendency to play from his heels. At the plate, he starts from an athletic stance. Short stride. Slight uphill path to the ball. Top exit velocity of 74 mph. Ran a 7.4 60. On the mound, he throws through a low ¾ to ¾ arm slot with short arm action. Fastball sat 74-76 mph with straight action. Breaking ball was down in the zone at 65-67 mph with 10/4 action. Also uses a 63-65 mph changeup with some sink to it. Needs to maintain arm speed.

Lucas Popovich, C/RHP, Green HS (OH), 2014

5-foot-10, 205-pound prospect with strong lower half.  From the crouch, he reached a top velocity of 70 mph. Short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Average hands and feet. Split times of 2.16 to 2.27. Will improve with better direction in his feet. At the plate, he starts from an athletic stance. Uses a leg kick. Tendency to bar in his load. Uphill path to the ball. Top exit velocity of 78 mph. Ran a 8.38 60.  On the mound, he throws through low ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Short arm action. Delivery stays online. Fastball sat 73-74 mph with straight action. Curve ball has gradual 1/7 action down in the zone at 57-59 mph. Slider is 59-60 mph while changeup is thrown at 62-63 mph with some sink down in the zone.
