Florida League

• The Florida League hitter who stood out the most was Sanford outfielder Thomas Broyles (Missouri); my first impression was that he looked “hitterish,” with a quiet setup and good pitch recognition. The 6-foot, 192-pounder has a compact lefthanded stroke and a knack for barreling up hard line drives, as he showed with an opposite-field RBI double on an 80 mph left-on-left slider and a crisp lineout to left on a 94 mph heater. But he also showed impressive power potential, hitting one of the two home runs I saw in the showcase, a moonshot over the scoreboard in right field. After transferring to Mizzou from the juco ranks, Broyles had a modest sophomore campaign, but he did control the strike zone well (18 BB/18 SO in 65 at-bats), which bodes well for his future. His bat will be his calling card going forward.

• Dalton Shuffield played a key role in Texas State’s run to the Sun Belt Conference regular-season crown this spring, anchoring the infield defense while hitting .330/.393/.427. He’s followed that up with a stellar summer for the Deland Suns, leading the Florida League with a .372 average and 11 doubles, while also stealing 12 bases in 13 attempts. Shuffield is a 5-foot-9, 160-pound grinder who plays with abundant energy, and he showed good contact skills in the box, with high hands and an open stance. He produced solid-average home-to-first run times and impressed with his slick actions at shortstop, showing the ability to make accurate throws on the run from various angles.
