Game Notes - Anaheim Lyons Tournament

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

Anaheim, CA – The Reno Huskies traveled to Southern California as they annually do take part in the 45th Annual Rod Wallace-Anaheim Lyons Baseball Tournament.  The Huskies opened up against the Glendora Tartans and starter, ’20 Bryan Perez (RHP). Reno started ’20 Skyler Hales (RHP) and both hurlers were sharp early holding each team scoreless through four innings of play.  The Huskies would get on the board first.  In the fifth, Perez issued a leadoff walk to ’19 Cade Grogan. Grogan advanced to second on a groundout by ’20 Gunner Gouldsmith (WSU). '19 Garret Damico  (CSU East Bay) promptly singled through the left side, scoring Grogan. Reno would add two insurance runs in the seventh on a two out, two-run single by ’19 Ryan Hess (University of the Sciences). Hales would toss six strong innings, 3 Ks 0 BBs.  Hess would come on for the save and the combined shutout.

Reno improves to 11-0 and continues to take advantage of solid pitching and defense.  The win was a good test and only the third time in eleven games that Reno has played a game to seven inning completion due to NIAA, but this day belonged to Skylar Hales and Ryan Hess.

’20 Skylar Hales, RHP, (Reno)

Large Frame, 6-foot-4, Hales is a physical right-hander. Hales pitches from a high ¾ slot with a short stride, upright delivery, providing fairly consistent down plane.  He tends to get away with pitches up in the zone at times, likely due to the tilt. His fastball ranged 78-81.  Hales had mostly area control of the plane over life fastball.  He threw a breaking ball 67-71 and showed the ability to locate both for a strike as well down in the zone for chase.  The changeup was 73-75 which would seemingly forecast more velocity left in the fastball which might be seen when his arm strength completely acclimates later in the Spring. Hales is projectable and more mound time should bring about velocity improvements.
