High School Team Preview: Covington

Trey Sofio
Louisiana Scouting Director

The Louisiana high school season kicks off on February 24th, the first day for regular season games. Most teams began practice on January 27th, getting their rosters set and finalizing their lineups.

Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we will be rolling out team previews of high school teams all across the state and across all classifications, eventually launching our Preseason Power 25.

We have been sending out our annual Preseason Questionnaire to coaches all across the state and as the responses flood in we will bring you a snapshot of what to expect along with top players and keys to success for that particular team. If you don’t see your team’s season preview make sure your head coach fills out his Preseason Questionnaire.

2020 Season Outlook

After finishing the 2019 season 11-18, the Lions head into the 2020 season looking to improve upon last year, and reach the postseason in Class 5A. Coach Jeff Dragg will have a relatively experienced club heading into the 2020 season, as the Lions return six everyday players and five pitchers. Junior outfielder, Jacob Gottschalk, leads a strong defensive unit in the outfield while also giving the Lions a tough out at the top of the order. While, 2020 1B/RHP Trent Rainey returns after a productive 2019 season, and should be a reliable stream of offensive production in the middle of the Lion order. Coach Dragg and the Lions are focused on limiting the free passes and unforced errors that hamstrung them during the 2019 season, but the solid foundation of veteran players with experience should help fix those woes, which would certainly place the Lions in the mix for a playoff run in 2020.
