Hoosier Holiday Showcase: Pitchers Analysis

On Sunday, December 7th, PBR Indiana hosted the 2nd annual Hoosier Holiday Showcase at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, IN. A total of 45 players from across the state participated in the event, including a total of 29 pitchers.

Top Ranked Pitchers

1. Cody Mobley, RHP, Mount Vernon HS, 2015: 6-foot-3, 180 pound righty is committed to Evansville.  Long, ¾ arm action with quick speed.  Good line to the plate, finishes athletic.  Fastball sat 90-91 with downhill plane.  Throws two breaking balls; plus 78-81 mph slider with sharp break and kept in the zone, 83 mph 11/5 curveball.  Changeup was 79-81.  Potential draft next June.     

2. Blake Walker, RHP, Chatard HS, 2016: 6-foot-5, 205 pound righty with strong, projectable pitchers frame.  Long, ¾ slot with good arm speed.  Easy effort throughout the delivery.  Good line to the plate, athletic finish.  Fastball is straight and kept down in the zone at 86-88.  10/4 breaking ball sat 72-73, flashed a couple of good ones but inconsistent.  Changeup sat at 80 mph with some sink.  Plenty of room to grow.   

3. Myc Witty, LHP, Lawrence North HS, 2015: 5-foot-10, 150 pound southpaw with a slender, athletic build and tons of pitchability.  He pitches from a low 3/4 slot with a quick, loose arm.  He shows easy effort with smooth rhythm within his delivery. Witty has good direction to the plate and lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball sat 81-83 with heavy action and consistently in the zone. Curveball sits 67-68 mph with late break and consistently thrown for a strike.  His changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed and sits 64-65 with some sink.

Drew Ashley, RHP, Evansville Reitz HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 165 pound righty pitches from a ¾ slot with above average arm speed.  Short arm action.  At times gets rushed in the delivery.  Fastball was 78-82 and thrown for a strike.  11/5 breaking ball showed late, sharp action at 71-72.  Changeup was thrown with near fastball arm speed at 64-65 mph and straight. 

Quinton Brummett, RHP, Ben Davis HS, 2017: 6-foot, 160 pound righty pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Long, loose arm action.  Regular effort with some rhythm in the delivery.  Good line to the plate, lands square.  Fastball was 78-79.  Breaking ball shows gradual break at 66-67 mph, but erratic in the zone.  

Bailey Buescher, LHP, Franklin Central HS, 2016: 5-foot-10, 150 pound lefty pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Long arm action.  Regular effort with some rhythm in the delivery.  Tendency to fall off towards 3B.  Fastball was heavy with some sink at 76-77.  10/4 breaking ball shows gradual movement at 60-62 but erratic in the zone; slows arm down.  Changeup was straight at 69-72 mph.  

Jordan Cozart, RHP, Evansville Central HS, 2016: 5-foot-10, 150 pound righty pitches from a ¾ slot with quick arm speed.  Arm action was long and loose.  Polished delivery with easy effort.  Fastball was 80-81 with occasional sink.  Curveball sat 67-70 with gradual movement.  Slider was 74-75 with gradual break.  Changeup was his best off speed pitch sitting 74-75.  Change was thrown with near fastball arm speed with sink and kept down in the zone for a strike.

Troy Cullen, LHP, Griffith HS, 2016: 5-foot-11, 180 pound southpaw pitches from a low ¾ slot.  Works primarily out of the stretch.  Inward turn, works across his body.  Average arm speed, repeatable delivery.  Fastball was 74-77.  Breaking ball sat 68-69 mph, but erratic in the zone.  Changeup sat 69-70.  Most pitches stayed on one plane.   

Logan Daily, LHP, Corydon Central HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 162 pound sophomore lefty pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Long arm action.  Choppy delivery, works uphill.  Fastball was straight at 71-73 mph and erratic in the zone.  10/4 breaking ball shows gradual break at 64-65; slows arm down.  Changeup sits 63-65 mph, erratic in the zone. 

Jacob Dickson, RHP, Portage HS, 2016: 6-foot-3, 205 pounder pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Long, loose arm action.  Tall to fall delivery.  Fastball shows some sink action at 77-78 and kept in the zone.  11/5 breaking ball shows late break and thrown for a strike at 62-65 mph.  Changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed at 68-70 mph.   

Conner Dove, RHP, Eastside HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 190 pound sophomore righty pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Slight stab on the backside of the delivery. Choppy rhythm.  Good line to the plate, lands square. Fastball was straight and hard at 78-81.  Good 12/6 curveball sat 62-63 with sharp break.  Changeup sits 67-70 with occasional sink and kept down in the zone.  

Noah Freimuth, RHP, Bishop Dwenger HS, 2016: 6-foot-2, 198 pounder possesses a strong, athletic frame.  Pitches from a ¾ slot with quick arm speed and a long arm action.  Tendency to rush the delivery and change arm slots.  Fastball was heavy with some sink at 81-83.  Slows his arm down on the 10/4 breaking ball which sits 76-77 with late break.  Changeup was erratic in the zone at 71-72.  

Noah Hoeffel, RHP, Bishop Luers HS, 2016: 5-foot-10, 150 pound righty pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Long arm action.  High effort delivery.  Gets rushed.  Good line to the plate, lands square. Athletic finish. Fastball sat 79-81. Slider sits 69-71 with late break from a 10/4 shape.  Changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed with some sink action.  

Sam Hughes, RHP, Brownsburg HS, 2018: 5-foot-8, 150 pound freshman uses a ¾ slot with quick arm speed.  Short arm action.  Deliver is a little choppy and at times rushed.  Good direction to the plate, lands square.  Fastball was 77-78.  11/5 breaking ball shows gradual break at 56-59; slows arm down.  Changeup sat around 64 mph with occasional sink but erratic in the zone; slows arm down.  Young player shows some potential.  

Evan Huntley, LHP, Huntington North HS, 2016: 5-foot-11, 183 pound southpaw pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Long arm action.  Stays in line to the plate, athletic finish.  Fastball sat 75-76 with slight run.  11/5 breaking ball was 64-65 with gradual break and thrown for a strike.  Changeup was thrown with near fastball arm speed and some sink at 69-70 mph but erratic in the zone.  

Grant Johnson, RHP, Lebanon HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 165 pound RHP pitches from a ¾ slot with a long arm action.  Slight stab on the backside.  Easy effort, tall to fall delivery.  Good rhythm throughout with good direction to the plate.  Fastball sat 80-84 for a strike.  11/5 breaking ball shows gradual movement at 60 mph.  Changeup was thrown near fastball arm speed at 68-71 with some sink, but erratic in the zone. 

Will Loy, RHP, Heritage Christian HS, 2015: 6-foot, 175 pound RHP pitches from a ¾ slot with good arm speed.  Long arm action.  Easy effort with some rhythm in the delivery.  Good direction to the plate.  Fastball was 82-83 and heavy with some cut.  11/5 breaking ball sat 66-68 with sharp break.  Changeup sat 74-75 with occasional sink action.  Ability to throw all pitches for a strike.  

Corbin Maddox, RHP, Daleville HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 185 pounder pitches from a ¾ slot from a long arm action.  Stays in line to the plate, lands square with an athletic finish.  Fastball was straight at 72-75 mph and thrown for a strike.  Showed two types of breaking balls, both with gradual break; one at 65-68, the other slower at 60-61.  Changeup was 64-65 mph.  Slows arm down on off-speed pitches and both erratic in the zone. 

Alex McCutcheon, LHP, Huntington North HS, 2016: 6-foot-1, 180 pound southpaw pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Long arm action.  Gets rushed in the delivery, falls off towards 3B.  Fastball was 79-82 with some sink.  10/4 breaking ball sat around 70 mph with gradual break.  Changeup was straight at 73 and left up in the zone.  

Noah Nigh, RHP, Rushville HS, 2016: 6-foot-2, 225 pound Junior pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Long arm action.  Rushed, choppy delivery.  Falls off towards 1B side, lands soft.  Fastball was straight at 74-77.  10/5 breaking ball shows late break but erratic in the zone at 76 mph.  Changeup was straight at 67-68 mph.  

Braden Odom, LHP, Anderson HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 165 pound southpaw pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Long arm action.  Easy effort.  Tendency to fall off towards 3B.  Fastball was straight at 76-80 and erratic.  10/4 breaking ball sat 62-65 with gradual break.  Slows arm down when throwing the breaking ball.  Changeup was thrown with fastball arm speed at 69-70.  

Sam Paddock, RHP, Lawrence North HS, 2017: 6-foot, 170 pound righty pitches from a low ¾ slot and a short arm action.  Average arm speed.  Easy effort, smooth rhythm throughout the delivery.  Lands square with a good line to the plate.  Fastball sat 77-78 with occasional run.  Breaking ball lacks identity at 60-63.  Slows arm down when throwing the breaking ball.  

Riley Potts, RHP, Lafayette Jeff HS, 2017: 5-foot-11 sophomore righty pitches from a high ¾ slot with above average arm speed.  Long, loose arm action.  Smooth, easy delivery.  Stays in line and lands square.  Fastball was 79-80 with some run and thrown for a strike.  10/4 breaking ball sat 65-66 with late break and thrown for a strike.  Changeup sat around 75 and thrown with near fastball arm speed, but erratic in the zone.  

Sean Smith, RHP, Peru HS, 2017: 6-foot, 160 pound sophomore righty  pitches from a ¾ slot with good arm speed.  Long arm action.  Has trouble repeating his delivery.  Fastball sat 80-81 with good movement.  10/4 breaking ball sat 70-73 with gradual break, but erratic in the zone.  Changeup was 75-76 with some sink and kept in the strike zone.  Also throws a 68-69 mph knuckle ball.    

Mitchell Sparks, LHP, Carmel HS, 2015: 6-foot-3, 172 pound senior pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Long arm action.  Good direction to the plate, athletic finish.  Fastball shows some sink at 77-79 mph.  11/5 curveball shows late break 56-59 mph.  Slider sits 63-64.  Changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed at 71-73 with some sink.  

Robbie Strader, RHP, Roncalli HS, 2016: 6-foot, 170 pound righty pitches from a ¾ slot with quick arm speed.  Arm action is short and loose.  Easy effort in a tall to fall delivery.  Smooth rhythm.  Fastball was heavy and up to 82 mph.  11/5 breaking ball sat 63-65 with late action and kept in the zone.  Changeup was thrown with near fastball arm speed at 73-74 with some sink action.  Ability to throw all pitches for a strike.  

Bailey Waugh, RHP, Homestead HS, 2016: 6-foot, 185 pound righty pitches from a low ¾ slot with a long, loose action.  Average arm speed.  Easy effort and smooth rhythm throughout the delivery.  Good direction to the plate and lands square.  Fastball sat 80-83 with slight movement.  10/4 breaking ball shows gradual movement at 63-65 but has the tendency to slow his arm down.  Changeup was thrown with near fastball arm speed at 72-73.  

Reid Werner, RHP, Greenwood HS, 2016: 6-foot-3, 173 pound righty possesses a strong, athletic frame.  Pitches from a ¾ slot with quick arm speed and a long, loose action.  Good line to the plate and finishes athletic.  Delivery is deceptive.  Fastball shows good downhill plane at 82-84.  Breaking ball shows gradual movement but erratic in the zone at 68 mph.  Changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed and has some sink action at 68-71.   

Jackson White, RHP, Eastside HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 210 pound sophomore righty pitches from a ¾ slot.  Long arm action.  Regular effort and some rhythm in the delivery.  Good line to the plate, lands soft.  Fastball was straight at 76-78 mph.  10/4 breaking ball was 67-69 with late break.  Changeup was thrown with near fastball arm speed at 72 and straight.
