On Wednesday, June 10, the PBR Illinois staff held the annual Underclass Trials showcase at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg, an open event for the state’s on-the-rise 2022, 2023, and 2024 prospects. This event featured a talented up-and-coming roster vying for a spot on Team Illinois at this year’s PBR Future Games.

Today, we’re going to begin breaking the event from a statistical perspective, utilizing the measured data we gathered. We’ll share the leaderboards from each of the statistical categories, highlighting the top performers at the Underclass Trials, all of whom remain uncommitted.

TOP 60-YARD DASH

Rank Name State School Class Pos 60-yard
1 Myles Supurgeci IL Mount Carmel 2022 OF 6.71
2 Kyan Gibbs IL Loyola Academy 2023 OF 6.91
3 Keegan Connors IL Jacobs 2022 C 6.95

Myles Supurgeci (Mount Carmel, 2022) has previously performed at a premium level in the 60-yard dash and he led the way, as expected, last week with a 6.71 mark. The 2023 Kyan Gibbs (Loyola Academy) recorded a 6.91, especially advanced for his age. And Keegan Connors (Jacobs, 2022), an athletic catcher and outfielder, was the third sub-7.00 runner on the day with his 6.95 time.

MAX FASTBALL VELOCITY

Rank Name State School Class Pos Max FB
1 Ashton Izzi IL Oswego East 2022 RHP 88 mph

The lean, long-levered righty Ashton Izzi (Oswego East, 2022) paced this group of pitchers with a max fastball velo of 88 mph, sitting in the 86-87 range. Ranked just outside the top-75 right now, Izzi is gaining some considerable steam headed into the summer and should be well on the rise the next time we update our state’s 2022 rankings. Oak Park-River Forest’s RHP/1B David Andolina (2022) is another follow arm we were aware of headed into Wednesday who showed well, sitting in the 82-85 mph range with a heavy fastball.

RHP/1B Grant Tenuta (Sandburg) recorded the firmest fastball velocity among the 2023s in attendance, topping 82 mph while sitting 80-81.

1 Ryan Kramer IL The Latin School of Chicago 2022 3B 95

Naturally, it was the 2022s who led the way here and 3B/RHP Ryan Kramer (Latin School of Chicago) is sitting at the top of this leaderboard with a 95 mph high off the tee. Glenbrook North’s Ryan Henschel (2022) had a pretty strong day across all leaderboards and his 94 mph mark in this category was second to only Kramer. Gabriel Lynch (Carmel Catholic, 2022), a strong and athletic outfielder, ran a 7.14 while recording a 92 mph best off the tee, too.

Carmel Catholic’s Lynch and 2023 grad Andrew Garcia (DePaul College Prep) showed best on their throws home from the outfield grass. Garcia’s a left/left prospect to know in the state’s incoming sophomore class as an all-around athlete who ran a 7.12 here while touching 79 mph from the mound.

MAX CATCHER VELOCITY

Rank Name State School Class Pos C Velo
1 Henry Wolfe IL New Trier 2023 C 75

We mentioned Connors’ athleticism in the 60-yard dash category, and he also topped 73 mph out of the crouch and he also demonstrated above-average actions for the position here.

It was Dean who averaged the lowest pop times of anyone on the day, while also recording the single-lowest time at the event (2.05). Libertyville’s Holmes marginally trailed Dean, while fellow 2022 grads like Connors, Tristan Kerr (Lake Forest) and Lorenzo Rios (Joliet Catholic) were all grouped next to each other inside the next group.
