Joey Oakie RHP / OF / Ankeny Centennial, IA / 2024

20+ scouts attended the Gregg Young Sports Complex to observe Joey Oakie's first outing of the 2024 season.

In his one-inning outing to start the spring, Oakie comfortably sat 93-96 mph throughout, with a solid overall feel for the zone. Most impressive about the performance was how he produced that velocity with seemingly very little effort to his delivery and release. As he continues to work himself up to 100%, it is not out of the realm of reality to see the velocity continue to increase over the course of the spring and head into the summer season.

Oakie showed a breaking ball in the 83-84 range, one with more of an 11-5 shape flashing hard diagonal break, slightly different from the east-west slider shape he threw last summer with Ankeny Centennial, but equally as effective with the ability to land for strikes along with missing barrels at the plate.

He's currently 47th on Prep Baseball's Draft Board with possible helium as he continues to ramp up his pitch count and stamina going into the Iowa high school season.

Trever Baumler RHP / C / Dowling Catholic, IA / 2024

Trever Baumler was his steady, typical self on Sunday, dominating on both sides of the ball for the Iowa Sticks. 

The TCU recruit has a true 3-pitch mix, increasing his value and projection as a starting pitcher at the professional level. Baumler used his fastball (90-93 mph) with solid command to both sides of the plate, complementing it well with an above-average feel for a changeup and slider. He is an easy mover down the mound, with quality rhythm and sequencing to his delivery and easy effort overall.

Baumler's two-way upside also intrigues. The Dowling Catholic product has a high level of athleticism and performs exceptionally well versus top competition defensively in the outfield. He also showcases above-average bat speed, hitting ability, and projectable power at the plate. 

Currently the #4 ranked player in the Iowa class and #215 nationally for Prep Baseball, Baumler has continued to improve his draft stock to many MLB organizations.
