Today we are releasing the first edition of the Small School Top 10 for the 2024 season. This ranking release is from VHSL Class 1 & 2 schools from across the state. Take a look at some notes on a few teams from inside the rankings.

  • Buckingham has run through their first half of their season. Outside of a narrow three run win over Appomattox, the Knights have won every game by at least six runs. Half of their wins have been shutouts and they have a frontline arm in Justin Gunter (Longwood). They have a rematch with Appomattox in a week, as well as another meeting with Randolph-Henry in two weeks.

  • Patrick County stumbled early versus Glenvar, but outside of they they have rolled through their schedule. Like Buckingham, Patrick Co. has a true ace in Tucker Swails (Virginia Tech). Swails is the reigning Class 2 Player of the Year and is having another Player of the year type of campaign in 2024.

  • Poqouson and Lebanon are both five loss teams, but simply in terms of the Top 10 teams in the Small School poll, those two play two of the hardest schedules for smaller schools. Poqouson has arguably the hardest schedule of any Class 1 or 2 teams due to their location and district. The Islanders play virtually all Class 3 and 4 teams, defeating a few this year. Lebanon on the other hand only has two losses in state this year, both one run losses to the current #10 Abingdon Falcons. Outside of the losses to Abingdon, the Pioneers have three losses to teams in Tennessee.
