John Urena's Seventh Inning Home Run Pushes Mater Lakes to a 4-1 Win
March 25, 2019
Southwest Miami was off to an 8-1 start to the season entering Saturday’s game against Mater Lakes. Southwest Miami would jump out to a 1-0 in the third, thanks to a wild pitch, but would strand the bases loaded. Southwest Miami would go on to strand 10 baserunners over the course of the day.
Dairon Veliz would get the start for Southwest Miami and would keep a talented, young Mater teams silet through five. Mixing fastball, curveball and changeup, he kept hitters off balance. Veliz would go 5+ innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out two.
Mater would get the seventh started with a leadoff double from Angel Ortiz. Eighth grader Bryant Zayas would then lay down a sacrifice bunt and an errant throw with the pitcher would tie things up in the seventh. Zayas was the youngest player on the field, but showed advanced defensive actions at short and a ton of offensive upside to follow.
This bunt from Bryant Zayas ties the game in the 7th. Zayas, an 8th grader on varsity, will be a young man to watch. A standout @EliteSquad tryouts, he already shows a lot of tools.

Leadoff hitter and Palm Beach State recruit, John Urena would come up big for Mater. On the first pitch he saw, he lined a fastball over the left field fence for the go-ahead, three- run home run. Mater would hold on to win 4-1, but despite the loss Eddie Siera is a player to follow for Southwest Miami. The uncommitted 2020 shortstop stood out both offensively and defensively. Rangy, above average defender with a compact, level swing.
