LUBBOCK, TX – The Hub City was able to showcase some of the top talent the state of Texas has to offer. With the presence and hype that surrounds No. 1 Colleyville Heritages SS Bobby Witt Jr. and the addition of the established Texas Tech program playing in town as well, it called for a busy weekend for the handful of scouts in the area. Despite windy conditions throughout the weekend, three days of covering the First Bank Classic featured numerous division one committed players, several junior college commits that have the potential and ability to be future D1 guys.

Final Scores:

Colleyville Heritage 11 – Frenship 0

Lubbock Monterey 7 – El Paso Montwood 6

Lubbock Monterey 5 – El Paso Americas 3

Lubbock Coronado 15 – Odessa Permian 10

Bobby Witt Jr., SS, Colleyville Heritage, 2019
Oklahoma commit (No. 1 overall ranked player in the 2019 class, and No.2 ranked player in the PBR draft rankings.) Although, I was not able to get any video on the 6-foot-1, 180-pound SS, the offensive numbers Witt was able to produce this weekend were almost video-game like. The young phenom posted a .826 AVG, going 16-19, with 2 2B, 3 3B, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 17 R.

Aidan Caputi, RHP, Colleyville Heritage, 2019
Uncommitted. Lean-athletic, wiry-strong frame at 5-foot-11, 140-pounds. The right-hander works from high ¾ arm slot, long, stiff arm action. Start from a crouched athletic stance, high quick leg kick, with a max effort delivery. His fastball sat 76-78 for the entire outing, pounds the strike zone and locates fastball to both sides of the plate. Curveball has gradual break, 12-6 shape at 58-60. Had some trouble locating the slider at 72-73, still developing command. His changeup with late sinking action at 65-67 seemed to be his go to pitch collecting multiple punchouts with it. Caputi was very impressive versus a talented Frenship lineup going 5 IP, H, 5K, 0 ER.

Mason Greer, 2B, Colleyville Heritage, 2019
Auburn commit (No. 29 ranked player in the Texas 2019 class, and No.1 ranked player at his position). Strong, physical frame at 6-foot, 200-pounds, with a well-defined lower half. The left-handed hitter has balanced setup at the plate, with simple load action, natural lift, loose hands, power to all fields, and great extension through contact. Greer went 1-for-3 Friday night against Frenship, with a
1B, and a sac-fly in the 5th. Despite only having one hit, Greer made loud contact on several balls, showing the ability to put together quality at-bats for the Panthers.

Chandler Freeman, 3B, Colleyville Heritage, 2019
Dallas Baptist commit (No. 21 ranked player in the Texas 2019 class, and No. 3 ranked player at his position). Physical 6-foot, 190-pound frame with wide shoulders, and a strong lower half. The two-way prospect put on another display of his ability to handle the bat. From the right-side Freeman roped a ball into left-centerfield gap for a two-run RBI double. The right-handed hitter works from a slightly opened athletic stance, with a small leg kick, excellent balance with short path to the ball.

Colton Brown, RHP, Frenship, 2019
Howard College commit. Estimated 6-foot, 150-pound right-handed pitcher, lanky, high-waisted athletic build, long limbs, has yet to fill out physically. Clean, athletic, easy arm action, high-3/4 arm slot. Smooth, up-tempo delivery, works downhill, stride direction in line, with a soft front side. Brown was very impressive through four innings of work, with his fastball sitting 85-87 with sinking action. Had trouble developing feel for his breaking ball, 11-5 shape, 76-79. The right-hander faced a very deep and talented lineup in Colleyville Heritage, but was able to keep the Panthers quiet through four, punching out five, and allowing two hits.

Zack Swindell, SS, Lubbock Coronado, 2019
Midland College commit. Athletic, strong, physical frame at 6-foot-2, 200-pounds, with well-defined lower half. Offensively, the right-handed hitter works from slightly opened balanced stance, with a short leg kick, short path to ball, explosive lower half, great extension through contact. Defensively, possesses plus arm strength, with plus speed, showcased his mobility and range on a backhanded ball in the hole, before firing across the diamond to record the out.

Caden Hensley 3B, Lubbock Coronado, 2019
Midland College commit. A lean-athletic frame at an estimated 5-foot-10, 150-pounds, with plenty of room for continued physical development. The left-handed hitter starts from a slightly opened athletic stance, with short jab step, loose hands, good leverage for size, natural lift, accelerates barrel through contact, high finish, naturally works the middle of the field. Displayed flashes of pop to the pull side, after hammering a ball to deep right field for a RBI double.

Cameron Stevenson, CF, Cornando, 2019
Uncommitted. A two-sport guy that is committed to McMurry to play football, is a confident quick-twitch athlete, lean-muscular frame at an estimated 5-foot-11, 160-pounds, with athleticism that is evident. Uses an athletic leg kick to get started, coiling his hip as he triggers his hands, short flat path to the ball. Offensively, turned in an impressive 3-4, 3 3B, 4 RBI, R, against Odessa Permian. Defensively, possesses above average speed, showcased range and ability to track the ball, tracking down multiple balls through high wind conditions.

Darell Hernaiz, SS, El Paso Americas, 2019
No. 8 ranked SS (No. 32 in Texas) in the 2019 class was on display this weekend in Lubbock. The Texas Tech commit is a confident, athletic, lean-muscular athlete, at 6-foot, 165-pound frame, with high-ceiling tools, and plenty of room to add strength at the next level. The right-handed hitter has projectable power, uses an athletic leg kick, accelerates the barrel through contact, ball jumps off the bat with backspin carry, consistent hard contact, aggressive lower-half, with above-average bat speed. Defensively, had uncharacteristic error but was able to bounce back and showcase his range and mobility, with a nice backhand in the hole. Possesses above average arm strength and speed.
