Over the next few weeks, our staff will periodically dive into each of our recently updated rankings and spotlight key players in each class. Today, we take a look at an uncommitted, athletic two-way in the 2024 class. Coming off injury, Gage Joseph (Cape Henlopen DE) looks poised for a breakout season on both sides of the ball this Spring.
On the bump, Joseph works downhill with intent, getting over the front side well with consistent feel for the zone with all three pitches. The arm works quick from close to an over the top slot with a shorter arm swing. The fastball plays in the low to mid 80's, working to both sides of the plate for strikes with gradual feel to the arm side. The curveball is thrown with confidence, showcasing bigger 12/6 shape that is thrown in any count for strikes. Joseph kills the spin on the changeup and showcases feel to the arm side with a ton of fade.
Offensively, the ceiling is extremely high for Joseph. Hitting from an upright stance, the hands work with rhythm through the back load, incorporating a rhythmic leg kick stride. The hands work quick through contact, utilizing whippy barrel action through an uphill path. The ball jumps to the pull side, showcasing strong, consistent line drive tendencies to both gaps and alleys. 98 max exit velocity, 88 mph outfield velocity and a plus runner (6.76 60-yard). The body has a ton of room to fill out, standing at a lean 6-foot-0, 175 pound frame.
