The Prep Baseball Report MN Underclass Prospect Games event took place on Sunday, June 17, 2018. The event was held at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. The event featured prospects from the 2020 & 2021 grad classes; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the MN Underclass Prospect Games.

As we drill down into the statistics: (38 players in attendance)

+ 21 players ran sub-7.2 60's.
+ 19 players recorded 85+ mph exit velocities
+ 11 players recorded 80+ mph infield throws
+ 6 players recorded 80+ mph outfield throws
+ 7 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base

+ 12 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

5-foot-9, 152-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.85 runner. Tall stance, easy load, some lift through contact, uses lower half in swing, routinely squares baseball with ability to use whole field, 82 mph exit velocity. Above avg. defender in outfield, moves with easy actions, above avg. hands and footwork, clean loose arm action with accuracy and carry to target, 86 mph arm from outfield. Controlled delivery on mound, clean arm action from high ¾ slot, lands inline to catcher with finish to plate, shows polish and athleticism on mound. Fastball was 81-83 mph with late arm-side run for strikes. Sharp late break on 1/7 curveball. Late down action on changeup for strikes.

Jack Baumbach, 3B, Farmington, 2020
6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitting third baseman. 7.37 runner. Square stance, toe tap trigger, flashes pop in bat, line drive approach, gap to gap hitter, 88 mph exit velocity. Active in field, sure hands, works out front, clean arm action, has carry and accuracy to bag, 87 mph arm across infield. On mound, medium balance point, pauses in tempo, short arm action from OT slot. Fastball was straight for strikes at 79-81 mph. Loopy break with avg. spin and shape on curveball. Solid action on changeup thrown with fastball arm speed.

Isaac Becker, C, Columbia Heights, 2020
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed hitting utility player. 7.02 runner. Taller physical frame that will continue add size and strength. Tall stance, leg kick trigger, flashes pop in bat to all fields, swings hard and makes loud contact, 93 mph exit velocity. Raw mechanics behind plate, needs improved footwork, above avg. arm, newer to position, interesting follow with continued development, 79 mph arm strength with 2.02-2.13 pop times.

Mitchel Casperson, SS/RHP, Le Sueuer Henderson, 2020
5-foot-9, 155-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.88 runner. Square stance, easy body load, clean bat path, slight lift through contact, routinely squares baseball, 84 mph exit velocity. Works low to ground, plays through ball, sure hands, soft glove, long arm action, accurate to bag, overall above avg. actions in field, 86 mph arm across infield. On mound, strike thrower, compact arm action, some quickness out front, solid extension and finish. Fastball was 81-82 mph showing straight action and occasional run to arm-side. 11/5 shape on breaking ball with larger break to plate. Shows athleticism on mound and repeats delivery well.                                                                                               

Noah Christenson, SS/RHP, Buffalo, 2020
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.2 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, flat swing plane, some stiffness in swing, spray contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete in field, works through ball, sure hands, arm works cleanly, 80 mph arm across infield. On mound; rocker step into athletic controlled balance point, drives down mound well, shows clean compact arm action. Fastball has slight arm-side run, is sneaky quick on hitter, thrown at 78-80 mph. Small shape and break on curveball with 11/5 shape. Has good good tempo and pace on mound; while throwing strikes.

Ben Clapp, C, Maple Lake, 2020
5-foot-9, 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Strong compact build. 7.32 runner. Low hand set, leg kick trigger, above avg. present strength, line drive contact, squares baseball with hard contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Needs improved footwork through plate, short exchange, solid accuracy, plays well in games, sure hands, keeps balls in front, has receiving ability, 74 mph arm strength with 2.08-2.16 pop times.

Charlie Dardis, LHP, Chaska, 2020
6-foot-2, 170-pound left-handed pitcher. Projectable frame that should continue to add size and strength. Solid overall mechanics, rocker step into controlled balance point, has tempo, easy arm action with minimal effort. Fastball was 74-78 mph with late arm-side life and misses barrels consistently. Late break on tight spinning curveball with 1/7 shape. Above avg. changeup, thrown with fastball arm speed, showing late run and sink. 

Teddy Deters, SS/RHP, Orono, 2021
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.93 runner. Square stance, still hands, collapse in lower half, clean swing plane, ability to drive ball to gaps, 87 mph exit velocity. Sure hands, tends to squat to field interrupting rhythm, accurate arm, 80 mph arm across infield. On mound; athletic rocker step into short balance point, stab on backside, with longer stride and extension to plate. Fastball was 76-79 mph with heavy life in bottom of zone. Loose spin on breaking ball for strikes.

Lamine Diaby-Gassama, OF/LHP, North St. Paul, 2020
210-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.8 runner. Present strength, flashes well above avg. power, some rawness, swing path is clean, gap to gap hitter, 88 mph exit velocity. Solid defender in outfield, long release on throws, avg. arm action, throws are accurate to target but lack carry, 81 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; controlled balance point, one piece arm action, more shoulder than arm in delivery. Fastball was 74-78 mph with straight action to plate. 1/7 breaking ball has avg. shape and spin for strikes. Solid feel for changeup with late down action for strikes. 

Teddy Donna, RHP, Hudson (WI), 2020
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed pitcher. Rocker step into athletic balance position, slight crouch, stiffer 2 piece arm action on back side and is clean out front, has good extension to plate. Fastball was 74-78 mph, straight, with inconsistent release point. Flashed late breaking curveball with 11/5 shape.

Rodney Erickson, OF/RHP, Woodbury, 2020
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.89 runner. Body load, lower hand slot, clean uphill path, pull approach, 88 mph exit velocity. Solid fielder, works through ball, quicker release, pie arm action, avg. carry with accuracy to target, 84 mph arm from outfield. On mound; short rocker step into medium balance point, pie arm action, finishes across body to plate. Fastball was straight at 78-81 mph with occasional cut action. Late break on slider for strikes with tighter spin. 

Nick Friedges, C, South St. Paul, 2020
5-foot-9, 150-pound left-handed hitting catcher. 7.8 runner. Young smaller frame, easy leg kick trigger, clean path through baseball with mid/pull approach, easy actions in box, has requisite mechanics and will continue to improve with added strength, 78 mph exit velocity. Flexible behind plate, athletic movements, holds pitches in zone, slight hitch in release, accurate arm to bag, 72 mph arm strength with 2.02-2.13 pop times. 

Kolby Gartner, SS/RHP, St. Michael-Albertville, 2020
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.08 runner. Square stance, shows easy rhythm in hands, line drive swing plane with lift through contact, flashes pop in bat to all fields, 91 mph exit velocity. Sure hands, solid footwork, long release on throws, one piece arm action, has accuracy to bag, 82 mph arm across infield.

Josh Gullickson, 3B/RHP, Wayzata, 2020
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.6 runner. Open stance, rolling hand load, quick hands to contact, lift in swing plane, flashes pop to pull side of field, 81 mph exit velocity. Clean arm action, tends to stop to field, athletic lateral movements, accurate to bag with carry, 85 mph arm across infield. On mound; medium crouched balance point, compact arm action, lands with closed foot, slightly upright on release. Fastball was straight at 77-80 mph delivered on a downhill plane to plate. Loose spin on breaking ball with 11/5 shape. Straight changeup with avg. fade and sink.

Miles Halligan, 3B, Hopkins, 2020
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitting third baseman. 7.42 runner. Square stance, uphill path, present raw strength, showed pop to deepest parts of field, fly ball hitter, 91 mph exit velocity. Above avg. carry with accuracy to bag, sure hands, higher fielding position, solid overall actions, 87 mph arm across infield.

Jonah Hoeg, 1B, PriorLake, 2020
6-foot-1, 220-pound right-handed hitting first baseman. 7.5 runner. Open stance, easy load, quiet head, routinely squares baseball, shows pop in bat to all fields, stays on and through contact, 89 mph exit velocity. Confident fielder, works well around bag, soft hands, above avg. arm for position with accuracy and quick release, 78 mph arm across infield.

5-foot-9, 150-pound left-handed hitting shortstop. 7.00 runner. Open stance with leg kick trigger, still head, stays on contact, line drive swing plane, consistently squares baseball, 83 mph exit velocity. Light on his feet, soft hands, works through baseball, compact arm action, solid actions, accurate to bag on throws, 77 mph arm across infield. 

Noah Juliar, OF, Burnsville, 2020
5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 6.83 runner. Fluid load, leg kick trigger, routinely squares baseball, has good feel for barrel, line drive and fly ball hitter, 82 mph exit velocity. Solid routes in field, solid defender, long stiff arm action, solid accuracy to target that lacks carry, 77 mph arm from outfield.

Konnor Kirchoffner, RHP/OF, Burnsville, 2020
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #109 ranked player in PBR 2020 Overall. 7.00 runner. Projectable frame with solid present strength and physicality, Square stance, body load, line drive contact, aggressive swinger, flashes pop in bat to pull side, 92 mph exit velocity. Above avg. actions in field, solid athleticism, above avg. arm, ball carries to target with accurate online throws to target, 91 mph arm from outfield. On mound; works up and over front side, ball jumps out of hand, athletic actions on mound, inconsistent release point and command occasionally. Fastball was 84-87 mph, heavy, with flashes of late life. Has velocity on breaking ball creating late sharp break. 

Jon Koehn, SS/RHP, Stillwater, 2020
5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.02 runner. Open stance, body load, sneaky strength in frame, flashes pop to pull side of field, 93 mph exit velocity. Light on his feet, sure hands, appropriate footwork, flashed arm strength across, accurate to bag, solid overall actions in field, 89 mph arm across infield.

Cade Lommel, LHP/1B, Delano, 2020
6-foot-2, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; one of top arms in MN 2020 class. Strike thrower with easy arm action and ability to work both sides of the plate. Fastball was 81-83 mph with heavy action and late arm-side run. Avg. breaking ball with 1/7 shape, consistently thrown for strikes, upsetting timing and allowing fastball to play up. Above avg. changeup thrown with fastball arm speed; works bottom of zone well with pitch. 7.5 runner. Slight open stance, hitchy hand load, drives through contact well with lower half, line drive swing plane, mid/pull approach, 75 mph exit velocity. Soft hands in field, tends to field underneath, comfortable around bag, 79 mph arm across infield.

Garrett McLaughlin, RHP, Rogers, 2020
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed pitcher. Smaller athletic frame with quick twitch actions. Side step into higher leg kick balance point, inconsistent release point, long arm action, lands slightly across body creating deception to plate. Fastball has life with various action at 81-84 mph. Above avg. breaking ball, 12/6 shape, with late break thrown with good velocity.

Matt Moore, 1B/RHP, Stillwater, 2020
6-foot-4, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.89 runner. Tall stance, pre-set hands, body load, line drive swing, consistent hard contact, shows ability to use whole field, 91 mph exit velocity. Solid feet and hands for position, accurate arm, works well around bag, 80 mph arm across infield. Runs enough and has long lanky frame; outfield may be option as well. On mound; good balance and body control, clean arm action, short path across chest after release. Fastball was 75-79 mph with heavy arm-side run for strikes. Looping break on 11/5 curveball. Changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed creating deception.

Maxwell Moris, C, East Ridge, 2020
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.02 runner. Square stance, deeper load with arm bar, works on slight uphill plane through contact, consistent solid contact, shows ability to use whole field, 85 mph exit velocity. Above avg. catch and throw skills with good footwork, quick hands, and arm strength on release. Has ability to receive, holds pitches in zone, athletic movements behind plate, smothers ball in front well on blocks, 79 mph arm strength with 1.93-2.02 pop times.

Matt Olive, C/RHP, Blake School, 2020
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.19 runner. Tall open stance, leg kick trigger, level head through contact, line drive swing plane with lift through contact, shows above avg. pop in bat, mid/pull approach, 92 mph exit velocity. Works through plate 77 mph arm strength with 1.95-2.05 pop times. Controlled athletic delivery, compact arm action, drives baseball downhill, lands inline to plate. Fastball was heavy at  83-85 mph with straight action to plate. Flashes ability to spin breaking ball with occasional late sharp break. Slight sink on changeup thrown with fastball arm speed.

5-foot-9, 145-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Smaller compact frame. Clean arm action, lands inline to catcher, has solid extension to plate with finish. Fastball was 79-83 mph with life and is sneaky quick jumping on hitter. 11/5 shape on breaking ball, slower velocity, with flashes of late break. Changeup is straight with flat action to the plate. 

Zachary Thorton, LHP, Northfield, 2020
5-foot-10, 125-pound left-handed pitcher. Thin frame, clean arm action, lands inline to plate, some hand quickness out front, shows ability to repeat delivery well. Fastball was 69-73 mph with late sinking action. Curveball has loose spin and early break for strikes. Straight flat action on changeup currently. 

Ethan Voss, OF, Burnsville, 2021
6-foot-3, 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 6.9 runner. Athletic thin frame, slight hand rhythm, pre-set load, line drive swing plane, gap to gap hitter, clean path through contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Fields out front, works through ball, confident in field, longer arm action and release on throws, online with carry and accuracy, 87 mph arm from outfield.

Evan Zamec, OF, Orono, 2020
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.4 runner.
