MENTOR - A passion for the game brings a strong desire for Sam Melnyk to play college baseball.

The Lake Catholic senior currently has his sights set on playing in Ohio, preferably at the Division I level.

“For me personally, I feel I’m the kind of player that is fully capable of playing at the highest level,” the left-handed hitting outfielder said. “I want to play against the best, but at the same time I want to play for whoever takes a chance on me. In my opinion, I’m capable of playing anywhere.  I plan on staying in-state, but I want to play against the best.”

The 91st-ranked senior in the state is doing his best to make it happen with visits to Kent State, Ohio U, Wright State, Youngstown State and Toledo while also talking to Lake Erie, Ashland, Marietta, Baldwin-Wallace and Mount Union.

“I’m communicating with all levels, I’m keeping myself open,” the 5-10 185-pounder said. “I want to stay closer to home. I’d rather have my parents drive a couple hours than several hours and have to stay the weekend. Basically, it’s a family thing.”

Melnyk points to his father as the biggest influence in his baseball life.
