Mid America Super Sixteen: 6.7.16

The Mid-America Super 16 tournament kicked off Thursday, June 7^th at various fields throughout Northwest Arkansas. For day one I sat up shop at Arvest Ballpark. Arvest Ballpark is home to the Kansas City Royal AA affiliate NWA Naturals.

Arkansas Prospect Menard 14 vs Sandlot Tulsa 18 1

The Arkansas Prospects Menard took care of Sandlot Tulsa 18, 14-1. The Prospects received a solid pitching performance by 2017 RHP Logan Gilbertson and 2017 RHP Noah Fowler. Gilberston pitched 4 innings allowing 3 hits while striking out 6. Fowler pitched the final three innings allowing just 2 hits and striking out 2.

Offensively, the Prospects pounded out 21 hits scoring 14 runs. 2017 MIF Casey Martin lead the Prospects going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Martin showed his versatility stealing a couple bags and showing off plus defensive tools. The offensive was explosive up and down the line up with 5 players having multi-hit games.

2017 RHP Logan Gilbertson pitched his four innings commanding his fastball on both sides of the plate 82-83 mph flashing a fastball up to 85 mph. He commanded his curveball and changeup both thrown 69-72 mph.

Arkansas Prospects Black 6 vs Midwest Nationals Blue 0

2017 RHP Ross Carver dominated the first four innings of the game for Arkansas Prospects Black, allowing their offense enough time to secure a 6-0 win over Midwest Nationals Blue.

Carver worked the lower half of the strike zone with a fastball 87-88 mph touching 90 mph sporadically during his appearance. He also threw an 11/5 curveball thrown 70-71 mph. 2017 RHP Brett Brockington pitched the final three innings working 82-85 mph with command of his secondary pitches.

Offensively 2017 OF/C McKinley Williams and Reed Sheppard had solid days offensively picking up multiple hits and scoring runs.

Arkansas Prospects 18 12 vs STL Naturals 0

The Arkansas Prospects 18 picked up a win against STL Naturals behind a strong pitching performance and a solid offensive day.

2018 LHP Jordan Wicks pitched 5 innings allowing no runs while scattering 6 hits. Wicks again impressed with his advanced pitchability locating 4 different pitches for strikes. His fastball worked 81-83 mph, curveball 66-68 mph, slider 72-73 and change up 70-72 mph. His slider was most effective especially against left-handed hitters.

2018 MIF Pate Fullerton and 2018 OF/C Andrew Hreha stood out as position players. Fullerton is a solid baseball player with advanced actions at most phases of the game. Time will tell if he develops more advanced athleticism, definitely a player to follow. Hreha played with a loud bat in all four plate appearances going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles. His lone out was a line drive hit to second base.

Another player to follow is 2017 RHP Collin Baumgartner, he is a 6-foot-6 right-hander with a large frame. He competed in the strike zone with a fastball 85-87 mph. He threw limited secondary pitches.
