Northeast Preseason Preview: Class of 2017 Player Analaysis

On Monday, February 17th over 120 prospects gathered at the Brunswick Bat Cage for the Northeast Ohio Preseason Preview. The event featured a combination of players from all classes. Below, we recap the top players from the Class of 2017.

TOP PROSPECT

Logan Doenges, LHP, Avon HS, 2017

Athletic 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame. Used a short over the top arm slot. Fastball was straight at 74-76 mph. Curveball had downward gradual movement at 62-64 mph, Changeup showed tailing and sinking movement at fastball armspeed 67 mph. Threw strikes with all three pitches. Good athletic body with room to fill. First-baseman showed good enough actions at the position, arm release was clean and threw with 74 mph arm strength. Offensively, started with balanced set up, no hand trigger, step and swing type hitter with simple mechanics. Should hit for good average and add power as he matures and continues to get stronger. Ran a 7.63 60-yard dash. 

CLASS OF 2017 PLAYER ANALYSIS

Andrew Mayor, 2B, R/R, University School HS, 2017

Young skinny 5-foot-10, 145-pound body frame with lots of room to fill and added strength. Infielder has tendency to play from his heels. Will improve as he consistently plays through the ball. Threw at 65 mph arm strength. Offensively, he used a wide stance set up, no present hand trigger, needs to continue to gain strength. Ran a 7.64 60-yard dash. On the mound, he threw through a high 3/4 arm slot with short arm action. Fastball was straight at 73-76 mph. Breaking ball had some spin at 68-71 mph while changeup sat at 73 mph. Will improve as lower half is better incorporated into delivery.

Collin Hohman, C, R/R, Trinity HS, 2017

5-foot-10, 160-pound body frame. Threw between a 2.16-2.31 pop time and with 73 mph velocity from behind the plate. Tendency to open early on his throws, which effects his accuracy and arm slot. Offensively, he started with a balanced stance, small light front step, no present hand trigger. Was a little jumpy to the ball at times and needs to work on consistently staying back. Ran a 7.38 60-yard dash.

Erik Hanna, C/3B, West Holmes HS, 2017

5-foot-9, 175-pound prospect with solid frame and thick lower half. From the catcher’s position he threw between a 2.12-2.28 pop time with 65 mph velocity. From the corner infield position he showed ok actions, played mostly on heels and threw 63 mph from the infield. Offensively, he started with balanced set up, higher leg kick, showed ability to use both sides of the field and make contact. Ran a 8.47 60-yard dash. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts in an athletic stance. Uses a leg kick to initiate his lower half. Short, level path to the ball.

Gregory Geiger, LHP, Northwest HS, 2017

Has a young 5-foot-4, 150-pound thin frame with room for added strength. Uses a short over the top arm action with average arm speed for his age. Fastball was 61-63 mph with some cut, curveball was loopy and had downward movement at 54-57 mph. Threw a straight change at fastball arm speed 59 mph. Left-handed hitter starts with his weight mostly on back foot, simple swing with no trigger. Ran an 8.10 60-yard dash, and threw at 63 mph from the outfield. In the field, he uses short arm action. Shows some athleticism in his feet. Top velocity of 65 mph on his throws.

Griffin Hunt, 3B, R/R, St. Ignatius HS, 2017

Has athletic 5-foot-11, 165-pound thin frame with room to fill. Infielder played from his heels. Will improve as he plays through and creates angles. Tends to let the ball get deep. Showed arm strength for his age at 71 mph. Offensively, starts from a slightly open stance, uses a small front step and swing, no trigger, but showed ability to make contact. Ran a 7.82 60-yard dash. On the mound, he throws with long arm action through high 3/4 arm slot. Fastball had occasional sink in the low to mid 70's. Changeup show similar movement to his fastball at 70-71 mph.

Ian Wray, RHP/IF, St. Francis DeSales HS, 2017

Young prospect with an athletic 6-foot, 175-pound stronger lower half frame. Used a straight over the top arm slot with average arm speed for his age.  Fastball was 69-72 mph.Threw a slower curveball at 59-62 mph. Changeup was straight at fastball armspeed 67 mph. Big lower half type frame at 6-foot, 175-pounds. Infielder showed average actions, with high arm release at 62 mph. Will improve as feet and transfer quicken. Offensively he started from a tall stance, no present hand trigger, no step, would like to see something in swing to help him produce more pop. Contact type hitter. Ran a 8.22 60-yard dash.

Jack Zimmerman, OF, L/L, Green HS, 2017

Has young 5-foot-8, 155-pound body with room to fill out. Outfielder reached a top velocity of 78 mph. Short arm action. Average hands in the field. Plays through the baseball. Offensively, he had an open stance in which he got back to even, showed ability to use both fields, would have liked to see him make more consistent contact on this occasion. Also ran a 7.26 60-yard dash.

Jared Becker, LHP, St. Edward HS, 2017

Young thin 5-foot-5, 110-pound frame with lots of room to grown and added strength.  Threw from a clean ¾ arm slot. Slow, deliberate tempo. Will improve as more momentum is created and carried through the delivery. Fastball was at 61-63 mph. Soft curveball showed sweeping type break at 56-59 mph. Changeup was thrown at fastball armspeed 61-62 mph.

Joshua Gibson, RHP/3B, R/R, Ashtabula Lakeside HS, 2017

Athletic 6-foot-1, 175-pound body frame with room to fill. Infielder, showed average actions with clean arm release at 72 mph. Offensively, he started with tall set up, no present hand trigger, gets foot down early, would like to see him smoothen out swing. Shows some quickness in his hands. Ran a 7.63 60-yard dash. On the mound, he sat in the mid to upper 70's through a 3/4 arm slot. Uses long arm action. Regular effort to his delivery. Breaking ball stays on one plane in the low 60's while changeup sat at 70-71 mph.

Justin Studd, SS, R/R, Wakeman HS, 2017

Skinny 5-foot-11, 155-pound body frame with lots of room for added strength. Infielder tends to stay on heels, will improve as he learns to play through the ball. Hands have room for improvement as he has a tendency to stab at times. He threw with 73 mph arm strength from the infield and 75 mph arm strength from the outfield. Offensively he begins with a balanced set up, hands back trigger that gets to arm bar. With more use of his lower half, power should increase. Ran a 7.75 60-yard dash. On the mound, he sat 71-74 mph with long arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot. Breaking ball showed spin at 59-61 mph. Will improve break as he stays on top of it. Changeup sat at 69-71 mph.

Zachary Bush, LHP, Lakota West HS, 2017

Young LHP, with athletic 6-foot, 185-pound frame. Uses a slinging arm motion to throw a 71-72 mph fastball. Showed two changeups, a split change at 60-62 mph, and a slip change which had curveball type movement at 59 mph. First-baseman showed slightly stiff actions, with 69 mph arm strength. From the outfield he threw with 68 mph arm strength. Projects best as a first baseman. Offensively, he started from a balanced set up, no present hand trigger, high front leg kick, needs to be more consistent with lower half use. Creates some lift off the bat in his swing. Ran an 8.34 60-yard dash.
