OK Fall Upperclass Games: Catchers Reports

PBR Oklahoma hosted the OK Fall Upperclass Prospect Games at The University of Central Oklahoma that featured 68 prospects from the 2022 and 2023 classes.  The event was highlighted by some impressive by both guys having recently committed, some that committed shortly after the event, as well as a few still looking to land a home at the next level.  Today we take a look at the 11 catchers from the event with some guys putting up some impressive numbers on both sides of the ball.  You can view full stats and event details by clicking here.

 

Jacob Knox, Edmond North (OK), 2023
 Positional Profile: C/1B
 Body: 6-0, 180-pounds. Athletic and projectable build with room for added strength and size in the future.
 Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance with an athletic posture.  Hands get set at shoulder height with a high back elbow and 45 degree barrel angle. Quick weight shift into the back leg.  Leg kick stride with the lower half working linearly through the zone into a slightly bent front leg.  Short and compact swing with hands working quickly through the zone.  Has good overall bat speed and hits with good leverage.  Shows good extension with a slightly uphill bat path and pull side pop.
 Power: 89.89 max exit velocity, averaged 78.04 mph. 274’ max distance. Hits with good leverage and shows some strength to the pull side.
 Arm: RH. C - 74 mph.   High 3/4 arm slot with a short and quick arm action.
 Defense: 1.95-2.02 pop times. Receives the ball with one knee in the dirt with good upper body posture and does a good job of working the glove underneath the ball and feel for pitch framing.  Feet work quickly out of the crouch with good rhythm.  Shows a quick exchange from throwing from the knee with accurate throws and good carry.  Proper blocking technique with good posture and recovery.
 Run: 7.10 runner in the 60.


Jack Cullen, Oklahoma Christian (OK), 2023
 Positional Profile: C/RHP
 Body: 6-0, 180-pounds. Athletic and projectable build.
Hit: LHH. Open stance with an athletic posture.  Hands get set below shoulder height with a relaxed back elbow with floating hands and a vertical bat angle.  Strong weight stack onto the back leg.  Knee knock leg lift stride with lower half working linearly into a firm front leg.  Quick pace and rhythm throughout the swing. Hands work very quickly through the zone with a flat bat path.  Strong top hand finish with a rotational path with the hands.  Pull side approach with a line drive mentality.  Developing balance through the finish.
Power: 90.1 max exit velocity, averaged 82.81 mph. 296’ max distance. Shows some strength in the hands at contact.
Arm: RH. C - 76 mph.   3/4 arm slot with a loose arm action.
Defense: 1.95-2.03 pop times. Receives the ball with one knee in the dirt and slightly crouched posture.  Shows strong wrists and receiving skills.  Short footwork on throws to second with exchanges low on the chest.  Throws had good carry and accuracy to the bag.  Blocks with one knee in the dirt with good recovery skills.
Run: 7.76 runner in the 60.


Tom Holbird,  (GA), 2022
Positional Profile
Body: 5-10, 167-pounds. Lean and developing build with room for added strength and size in the future.
Hit: RHH. Neutral stance with an athletic posture and weight pre-loaded into the back leg.  Hands get set quietly into position below shoulder height with a vertical bat angle and a high back elbow.  Linear weight transfer into a firm front leg.  Simple rhythm and repeats set up well. Drives the lower hand hard through the inside part of the ball.  Level bat path and line drive approach.  Uses the middle of the field well.  Keeps head behind the ball at contact.
Power: 89.63 max exit velocity, averaged 85.09 mph. 259’ max distance.
Arm: . C - 75 mph.   High 3/4 arm slot with a short and quick arm action.
Defense: 1.95-2.09 pop times. Receives the ball with one knee in the dirt and a low posture with good hip flexibility.  Feet and hips work very quickly out of the crouch with good direction and momentum headed towards second base on pop throws.  Strong lateral blocking ability with quick hips and good posture.
Run: 7.70 runner in the 60.


Colton Strange, Yukon (OK), 2023
Positional Profile: C
Body: 5-10, 175-pounds. Athletic build with room for added strength and size in the future.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance with an upright posture in the upper body.  Hands get set above shoulder height with a high back elbow and a wrapped barrel angle.  Strong weight shift into the back side.  Utilizes a quick two tap stride into a wide base.  Lower half works rotationally through the zone into a firm front leg. Level bat path with a line drive approach.  Long levered swing with hands working rotationally around the ball.  Shows the ability to drive the ball well to all fields.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.
Power: 86.33 max exit velocity, averaged 73.37 mph. 299’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 76 mph.   High 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action.
Defense: 1.98-2.10 pop times. Receives the ball with one knee in the dirt and arm side leg straight out.  Shows strong wrists and pitching framing skills.   Methodical footwork working directly to the the bag on throws to second with a firm plant leg.  Throws had good accuracy to the bag with developing carry.   Blocks with one knee in the dirt and shows good lateral range.
Run: 7.75 runner in the 60.


Jace Wright, Jenks (OK), 2022
Positional Profile: C/OF
Body: 5-11, 185-pounds. Proportional build with room for added strength in the future.
Hit: RHH. Neutral stance with an athletic posture.  Hands get set at shoulder height with a high back elbow and a 45 degree bat angle.  Strong weight stack onto the back leg with lower half working short and rotational into a firm front leg.  Uses a short leg kick stride with foot getting down early. Slight uphill bat path with quick hands working through the zone.  Shows the ability to get good extension to the pull side.  Works the hands to the inside part of the ball well.  Controlled rhythm throughout the swing with developing balance.
Power: 85.9 max exit velocity, averaged 79.11 mph. 280’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 71 mph.   High 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action.
Defense: 2.01-2.20 pop times. Receives the ball with one knee in the dirt and a firm wrist.  Methodical footwork on throws to second base with good accuracy and developing carry.  Strong blocking technique with good posture and recovery skills.
Run: 7.46 runner in the 60.


Benjamin Huntley, Norman (OK), 2022
Positional Profile: C/OF
Body: 5-10, 185-pounds. Stocky build with strength in the lower half.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance with an upright posture.  Hands get set at shoulder height with a relaxed back elbow and 45 degree bat angle.  Slight arm bar posture with lead arm.  Quick weight stack onto the back leg with lower half working linear to a firm front leg.  Knee knock stride into an athletic base. Rotational path with the hands.  Sees the ball deep into the zone and works the hands hard to the inside part of the ball.  Level bat path with a strong top hand finish.  Shows the ability to use the middle of the field well.
Power: 89.21 max exit velocity, averaged 83.49 mph. 340’ max distance. Gets good carry with extension and good hand strength.
Arm: RH. C - 72 mph.  OF - 78 mph. High 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action.
Defense: 2.05-2.13 pop times. Receives the ball with traditional set up and good posture.  Feet work directly to the bag on throws to second with the exchange taking place lower around the chest.  Shows high posture on blocks with one knee working to the dirt.  In the outfield attacks the ball with smooth rhythm and shorter strides.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with good glove action and soft hands.  Short step behind shuffle crow hop technique with good momentum headed towards the target.
Run: 8.04 runner in the 60.


Heath Brown, Yukon (OK), 2022
Positional Profile: C
Body: 5-8, 200-pounds. Stocky build with strength in the lower half.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance with an upright posture and narrow base.  Hands get set tight to the body at shoulder height with a relaxed back elbow and 45 degree barrel angle.  Quick weight shift into the back leg.  Short leg kick stride with lower half working rotationally through the zone into a slightly bent front leg. Short and compact with a rotational path with the hands.  Works the hands to the inside part of the ball with a slight uphill bat path.  Hands work quick through the zone and has good overall bat speed.  Keeps head behind contact well.
Power: 82.1 max exit velocity, averaged 63.38 mph. 219’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 70 mph.   3/4 arm slot with a short arm action.
Defense: 2.08-2.21 pop times. Receives the ball with one knee in the dirt and strong wrists.  Developing footwork on throws to second base.  When lower half and exchange are in rhythm the throws have good carry and accuracy to the bag.   Strong blocking technique with good posture.
Run: 8.26 runner in the 60.


Daniel Yardley, Mustang (OK), 2023
Positional Profile: C
Body: 5-11, 225-pounds. Stocky build with strength in the lower half.
Hit: RHH. Neutral stance with a slightly crouched posture.  Hands get set slightly below shoulder height with a high back elbow and flat barrel angle.  Strong weight stack on tot he back leg with lower half working linearly through the zone into a firm front leg. Hands work very quickly through the zone with good overall bat speed.  Uphill bat path and tries to work the ball up in the air.  Lean back in posture at contact.  Stays behind the ball and swings with maximum effort.
Power: 89.95 max exit velocity, averaged 77.46 mph. 317’ max distance. Maximum effort swing with good hand strength.
Arm: RH. C - 72 mph. INF - 80 mph.  High 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action.
Defense: 2.09-2.22 pop times. Receives the ball with high posture and one knee in the dirt.  Feet work quickly out of the crouch and gains a lot of ground on throws to second with footwork.  Throws had developing accuracy and carry to the bag.  Shows quick blocking technique with good posture.  In the infield attacks the ball with short strides and active feet.  Works around the ball with some rhythm and fields with a high waist bend and soft hands. 
Run: 7.90 runner in the 60.


Peyton Roberson, Duncan (OK), 2022
Positional Profile: C/1B
Body: 6-0, 215-pounds. Physical and mature frame with present strength.
Hit: LHH. Slightly open stance with a narrow base and upright posture.  Hands get set above shoulder height quietly into position with a high back elbow and 45 degree barrel angle.  Quick weight stack onto the back leg and utilizes a smooth leg kick stride.  Lower half works linearly through the zone into a firm plant leg. Hands work directly to the ball with a level bat path.  Works the hands well to the inside part of the ball and gets good extension to all fields.  Hands work quickly through the zone.  Gets the barrel into the plane early and through extension well.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.
Power: 93.94 max exit velocity, averaged 85.22 mph. 315’ max distance. Power potential with good extension to the pull side.
Arm: RH. C - 76 mph.   High 3/4 arm slot with a short action.
Defense: 2.09-2.24 pop times. Receives the ball with good posture and traditional footwork.  Strong wrists and pitch framing skills.  Methodical footwork with lead leg working far out on the plate and extended.  Transfers deep into the body with throws having developing carry to the bag.  Strong blocking skills with good hip flexibility and recovery skills.
Run: 7.44 runner in the 60.


Spencer Carollo, Tuttle (OK), 2022 Mid America Christian Commit
Positional Profile: C/OF
Body: 5-9, 160-pounds. Lean and athletic build with room for added strength and size in the future.
Hit: LHH. Neutral stance with a narrow base and upright posture.  Hands get set at shoulder height quietly into position with slight arm bar posture.  Relaxed back elbow with a 45 degree barrel angle.  Simple stride and weight transfer.  Lower half works linearly through the zone into a slightly bent front leg. Short and compact stroke with hands working hard to the inside part of the ball.  Level bat path and line drive approach.  Strong top hand finish.  Hands work quickly through the zone and shows a strong ability to match plane with the pitch.
Power: 92.94 max exit velocity, averaged 84.86 mph. 327’ max distance. Gets most out of swing with strength in the hands at contact.
Arm: RH. C - 68 mph.  OF - 80 mph. Over the top arm slot with a short arm action.
Defense: 2.14-2.22 pop times. Receives the ball with one knee in the dirt and strong wrists.  Methodical footwork on throws to second with strong push off the back leg.  When in sync the throws have good carry and accuracy to the bag.  Strong blocking technique with good posture.  In the outfield attacks the ball with shorter strides and controlled rhythm.  Fields the ball out in front of the glove side leg with a feel for glove action and soft hands.  Quick shuffle crow hop technique.
Run: 7.20 runner in the 60.


Jiovanii Delgado, Cleveland (OK), 2023
Positional Profile: C/2B
Body: 5-6, 160-pounds. Lean and developing build with room for added strength and size in the future.
Hit: RHH. Neutral stance with a wide base and slightly crouched posture.  Hands get set at shoulder height tucked into the body with a high back elbow and vertical bat angle.  Short weight sink into the lower half.  Simple stride to a wider base with lower half working rotationally through the zone. Flat bat path with a line drive approach.   Works the middle of the field well with hands working hard to the inside part of the ball.  Rotational path through the zone with a strong top hand finish.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.
Power: 78.03 max exit velocity, averaged 72.78 mph. 209’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 63 mph.   High 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action.
Defense: 2.40-2.51 pop times. Receives the ball with one knee in the dirt and an upright posture.  Methodical footwork out of the crouch on throws to second with short push off the back leg.  Throws had developing carry to the bag.  Upright posture on blocks with knees slightly late to the ground and good recovery skills.
Run: 7.77 runner in the 60.
