Ohio Unsigned Senior Games: Team 4 Player Analysis

The PBR Ohio Unsigned Senior Games was held at The Ohio State University. With over 120 players participating, schools from Ohio and surrounding states gathered to evaluate the talent. Already, Marysville RHP Jarod Yoakam committed to the University of Cincinnati,Massillon Jackson LHP Sam Williams committed to Eastern Kentucky, and Troy RHP Zachary Kendall as well as Bishop Ready catcher Hunter Clanin both committed to Bowling Green. Andrew Cioli, RHP, St. Ignatius HS, 2014

6-foot-5, 175-pound right-handed pitcher with tall, lanky frame. Plenty of room till out. Throws through ¾ arm slot. Fastball shows slight run at 81-82 mph. Very projectable. Will add velocity with increase strength and use of his lower half. Upper body type pitcher at present. Breaking ball sat between 62-65 mph with 11/5 break. Tendency to get on the side of the pitch keeping it on one plane with some spin. Interesting prospect that could really develop given his present size and room for growth.

Ben Hughes, RHP/OF/3B, Tippecanoe HS, 2014

5-foot-11, 175-pound two-way prospect. Athleticism gives him the play ability to do several things at the next level. On the mound, he shows the ability to throw multiple pitches for strikes and keep hitters off balance. He sat 83-85 mph with arm side run through a high ¾ arm slot. Breaking ball shows late 12/6 action with good depth at 68-71 mph. Also shows an effective cut fastball at 81 mph that provides hitters a different look. Change up is thrown near fastball arm speed with good differential at 75 mph. From the outfield, he uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 85 mph with accuracy on his throws. Plays through the baseball. Natural actions. Likely a corner type. Also showed well at third base with good reactions and some softness in his hands. Reached a top exit velocity of 82 mph across the infield. At the plate, he uses a balanced, athletic approach. Short stride with little wasted movement. Squared the ball up using a wood bat. Showed good bat speed. Line drive type hitter with pop in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 84 mph. Ran a 4.35 out of the box.

Brian Guck, 3B, Elder HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 175-pound third base prospect with big, athletic frame. Uses short arm action through low ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 73 mph across the infield. Average hands and feet. At the plate, he starts in a slight crouch with an open stance. Takes uphill path to the ball. Lower half tends to collapse a bit. Good bat speed through the zone. Registered a top exit velocity of 85 mph. Line drive production with power in his swing. Ran a 4.74 out of the box.

Cole Proia, IF/RHP, Moeller HS, 2014

5-foot-11, 175-pound infield prospect. Shows good athleticism and ability to play multiple infield positions. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 79 mph across the infield. Plays through the baseball. Shows lateral range. At the plate, he starts with a slight open stance. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Good use of his lower half. Pull tendencies in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 85 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.45 out of the box. On the mound, he shows arm strength at present. More of a thrower than a pitcher. Fastball sat at 86-87 mph and reached up to 88 on a couple of occasions. Tended to be max effort and up in the zone. Breaking ball showed potential at 73 mph. 

Colin Fitzgerald, 2B/OF/RHP, Keystone HS, 2014

6-foot, 140-pound prospect with a thin frame. Uses long, loose arm action in the field from a low ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 77 mph. Shows some athleticism and quickness in his feet. At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a long stride. Tends to wrap in his load. Short path, Contact type hitter that will add power as he physically matures. Registered top exit velocity of 78 mph off the tee. On the mound, the lanky right-hander sat 79-81 mph with straight action on his fastball. Will pick up velocity with improved use of his lower half. Breaking ball showed good depth down in the zone at 64 mph.

Damian Helm, 1B/LHP, Convoy Crestview HS, 2014

6-foot-4, 183-pound southpaw with tall, thin frame. Shows raw potential as a two-way prospect. On the mound, he throws with short arm action through a ¾ arm slot. Proved tough on left-handed hitters. Fastball sat at 80-81 mph. Also used an effective 68-69 mph breaking ball with 2/8 movement. Defensively, he moved well around the bag at first. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph. Showed well at the plate. Starts in a tall stance. Good balance in his swing. Slight uphill path. Registered top exit velocity of 78 mph. Ran a 4.6 out of the box.

Daniel Nyquist, RHP/OF, Lebanon HS, 2014

5-foot-10, 190-pound prospect with solid frame. From the outfield, he uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Throws uphill. Top velocity of 71 mph. Average feet and hands. Best suited for a corner spot. At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a short stride. Slight uphill path. Showed some pull occasional pull power. Registered top exit velocity of 85 mph. On the mound, he sat at 76-77 mph through a ¾ arm slot with short arm action. Relied on a 73 mph changeup. Pitches to contact.

Danny Hentz, RHP/OF, Northwest HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect with good athleticism. Projects best on the mound with 81-83 mph fastball through high ¾ slot. Uses long arm action with some quickness to it. Showed a 70 mph breaking ball with 11/5 action. From the outfield, he uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Good carry to his throws. Top velocity of 83 mph with accuracy. Needs to shorten up his transfer. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts in an open stance. Somewhat of a choppy rhythm. Shows some quickness in his hands. Slight uphill path to the ball with pull tendencies in his swing. Registered a top exit velocity of 89 mph.

Derek Battise, LHP/1B, Ironton HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 205-pound two-way prospect with tall, thick frame. On the mound, he throws from a ¾ arm slot across his body with average arm speed. Fastball showed slight cutting action at 72-75 mph. Breaking ball had 2/8 movement between 64-69 mph while his changeup sat at 70 mph. At first base, he used a high ¾ arm slot. Average range. Reached a top velocity of 69 mph. At the plate, the left-handed hitter has an aggressive swing. Uses short stride. Shows quickness in the zone. Registered top exit velocity of 85 mph. Slight uphill path to the ball with occasional pop. Ran a 5.11 out of the box.

Drew Deaton, OF, Lakota East HS, 2014

5-foot-11, 165-pound outfield prospect with average, athletic frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Covers good ground. Reached a top velocity of 81 mph on his throws. Shows some length to his transfer. At the plate, he starts in a slightly open stance with a tall setup. Uses a short stride. Rotational type hitter. Hands work through the zone. Pull tendencies in his swing. Registered a top exit velocity of 83 mph. Ran a 4.68 out of the box.

Hunter Losekamp, C, Milford HS, 2014

6-foot-4, 228-pound prospect with impressive physical frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot from the crouch. Good arm strength with 79 mph velocity from the crouch. Tends to wind up in his transfer. Recorded pop times between 2.00 to 2.06 with accuracy to his throws. Offensively, the right-handed hitter shows consistent contact with power potential in his swing. Takes slight uphill path. Good bat speed through the zone. Registered top exit velocity of 88 mph off the tee. Squared up the baseball to all fields. Ran a 4.86 out of the box.

Jarrod Hall, OF, Hamilton HS, 2014

6-foot, 160-pound left-handed hitting outfielder with average, athletic frame. Uses short arm action through ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 77 mph from the outfield. Average receiving skills. Likely a corner type. Starts in an athletic stance. Shows some quickness in his hands. Line drive type swing with some pull power. Fluid rhythm to his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 81 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.49 out of the box.

Jeff Paul, OF, St. Henry HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 180-pound prospect with tall, lanky frame. Corner outfield type. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph. Uses a small crow hop. Will add carry as he incorporates more of his lower half into his throws. Plays through the ball. Offensively, the right-handed hitter starts in a tall stance. Bars his arm in his load which creates some length. Line drive production will pull tendencies in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 76 mph. Ran a 4.76 out of the box.

John Heckman, SS/2B, Hamilton HS, 2014

5-foot-10, 165-pound middle infield prospect with pro-typical build. Uses short arm action and quick transfer. Reached a top velocity of 77 mph across the infield. Fluid footwork. Needs to take advantage of athleticism with better routes to the ball. Shows versatility to play either position. At the plate, he starts with an open stance. Uses a short stride. Compact swing. Good bat speed. Registered 86 mph exit velocity off the tee. Line drive production with pull tendencies. Ran a 4.4 out of the box.

Josh Kovacs, 3B/1B, Westerville North HS, 2014

5-foot-8, 165-pound with average, athletic frame. Uses short arm action in the field. Average hands. Tends to be flat footed. Reached top velocity of 73 mph. Also shifted over to first base. Moves well off the bag. At the plate, he hits from a balanced, athletic stance. Uses a short stride. Uses level path to the ball. Line drive production. Registered top exit velocity of 76 mph. Ran a 4.6 out of the box.

Kegan Lanter, C/OF, Thomas Worthington HS, 2014

5-foot-8, 175-pound prospect with small, solid frame. Projects as a catcher or left fielder at the next level. From the outfield, he reached a top velocity of 74 mph. Shows average feet. Tends to throw uphill. From the crouch, he reached a top velocity of 73 mph. Tends to wind up in transfer, which creates some length. Accurate throws. Pop times between 2.10 to 2.33. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts in a slight crouch. Maintains balance in his swing. Uses small stride with minimal load. Rotational type swing. Level path to the ball. Pull tendencies. Squared up the baseball. Registered top exit velocity of 80 mph. Ran a 4.34 out of the box.  

Kendle Stiner, SS/RHP, Keystone HS, 2014

6-foot, 192-pound prospect with strong, physical build. Likely best suited for third base at the next level. Short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Good arm strength with top velocity of 82 mph across the diamond. More reactionary type player. At the plate, he triggers with a small leg kick in his load. Will enhance power and consistency with better use of his lower half. Slight uphill path to the ball. Hard, consistent contact with pull tendencies. Top exit velocity of 81 mph. Ran 5.07 out of the box. On the mound, he throws with quick arm speed through a high ¾ slot. Fastball sat at 83-84 mph and bumped up to 85. Breaking ball shows spin at 65 mph and changeup was thrown at 73 mph. Delivery requires some effort.

Marty Schuerger, RHP, Bay Village HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 180-pound righty with tall, thin build. Uses slight inward turn in his delivery. Throws with short arm action through high ¾ arm slot with average arm speed. Fastball shows slight sink at 79-81 mph. Breaking ball was down in the zone at 70 mph with some spin while changeup showed fade at 72-73 mph.

Matt Bogan, RHP, Mechanicsburg HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed pitcher with solid, athletic frame. Uses a slow tempo on the mound. Throws through ¾ arm slot with short arm action. Fastball was straight at 77-78 mph. Breaking ball fluctuated between 65-68 mph. Needs to develop consistent command of the pitch. Changeup was straight at 72-73 mph.

Matt Tom, 2B/3B, John Glenn HS, 2014

5-foot-11, 195-pound prospect with strong, athletic build. Throws through high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 73 mph across the infield. Average hands and feet. At the plate, he starts in a slightly open stance. Smooth load with a long stride. Hands get into loaded zone. Short path to the ball. Line drive production with occasional power in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 80 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.5 out of the box.

Patrick Corcoran, LHP, North Canton Hoover HS, 2014

6-foot-4, 170-pound southpaw with tall, lanky frame. Throws with long arm action and average arm speed through ¾ arm slot. Tends to wrap in his back arm action. Regular effort to his delivery. Fastball sat in the high 70’s and reached up to 80 mph on several occasions. Displayed slight cutting action to his fastball. Breaking ball sat at 70-71 mph. Showed good depth with command of the pitch. Needs to work on maintaining arm speed.

Paul Smith, RHP/IF, Mount Vernon HS, 2014

5-foot-10, 152-pound prospect with thin frame. Projects as a second base type in the field. Short arm action. Reached a top velocity of 71 mph. Average footwork. Transfer shows some length. At the plate, he starts in a crouch. Minimal upper half load. Short stride. Contact type hitter. Registered top exit velocity of 70 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.7 out of the box. On the mound, he throws through a ¾ arm slot with average arm speed. Fastball was straight at 73-75 mph. Also used a 61 mph breaking ball.

Pierce Knisley, RHP, Waverly HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 150-pound lanky right-hander pitcher. Emerged as one of Ohio’s top unsigned arms after this event. Skinny frame with plenty of room to fill out. Projectable prospect that should only get better as he matures. Fastball sat at 86-87 out of the windup through a ¾ arm slot. Shows quick arm speed. Breaking ball showed slurvy type action at 72 mph. Stayed on one plane, but showed ability to be an out pitch at times. Changeup sat at 76 mph.

Tim Feasel, 3B/OF, Olentangy HS, 2014

5-foot-11, 185-pound prospect with strong, athletic frame. Uses long arm action through ¾ to high ¾ arm slot. Corner outfield type. Good reads. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph. In the infield, he reacts well at third base. Needs to play on the toes of his feet as he tends to get flat. Reached a top velocity of 74 mph. Winds up in his transfer. At the plate, he starts in an athletic, balanced stance. Uses a short stride. Compact swing. Level path that doesn’t create much loft. Overall fluid rhythm. Registered top exit velocity of 80 mph. Ran a 4.69 out of the box.

TJ Storer, LHP/1B, Moeller HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 200-pound two-way prospect. All around solid prospect. On the mound, he sat at 78-80 mph through a ¾ arm slot. Fastball shows excellent natural cutting action. Showed ability to come in on right-handers and away on left-handers with the pitch. Also used a 67-69 mph breaking ball with late 1/7 break out of the same tunnel. Struck out five of six hitters that he faced. Fills up the strike zone. Defensively, he shows well around first base. Good reactions and awareness. At the plate, he starts from a balanced, athletic stance. Uses a leg kick in his stride. Good use of his lower half. Uphill path to the ball. Line drive production with pull power. The ball jumped off his bat. Registered top exit velocity of 88 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.59 out of the box.

Zach Kendall, RHP, Troy HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 140-pound lanky righty committed to Bowling Green shortly after the event. Throws with quick arm speed and long arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Hides the ball well. Fastball sat at 83-86 mph with good run. Also used a 70-73 mph breaking ball with sharp 11/5 break. Showed the ability to throw the pitch in any count. Interesting prospect that should only get better as he fills out his tall, lanky frame.

Zach Mason, C, Pickerington North HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 198-pound catcher with thick frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 71 from the crouch. Pop times between 2.26 to 2.35. At the plate, he starts in a crouch with a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride. Takes short, level path to the ball. Pull tendencies in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 85 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.8 out of the box.
