Game Recaps from Day 3 of Tournament 12

British Columbia Orange vs Ontario Green

Rogers Centre - Ontario Green’s starting pitcher Austin Shields battled some control issues with his fastball in the early going, but still managed to hold BC scoreless over the first three frames. Showing his composure on the mound, Shields was able to pitch around three hit batsmen and three base on balls escaping unscathed. That all changed in the fourth when he proceeded to walk four of the first six batters he faced, resulting in a seven run inning. That gave B.C Orange the lead after Ontario jumped out early 3-0.

The only reason this game was kept respectable was due to three home runs crushed by Ontario. Cooper Davis, a newly committed recruit to Vanderbilt University as of 10:30pm Wednesday night, started the bottom half of the first with a solo rope over the right field wall at The Rogers Centre. Max Wright, then led off the bottom of the second with a solo shot of his own in almost the exact spot Davis left one inning earlier. Luke Van Rycheghem made the game a little more respectable in the bottom of the seventh when he smacked a two run shot out to right, scoring Adam Hall who went 3-4 on the day with a double, two triples and three runs scored. Hall showed off his speed today, compiling 12 total bases in the game. Nick Howie also added an RBI, lacing a single up the middle in the third.

It looked as if Ontario Green had things under control with their talented lineup starting to swing the bats like expected. But a patient BC lineup, along with Ontario’s inability to find the strike zone, resulted in BC Orange’s 10-6 win.

Ontario Black vs Ontario Green

Rogers Centre - In a rematch of Tuesday night’s 0-0 tie, Ontario Black and Ontario Green were back at it underneath the lights and an open roof. While the first game was all pitching and saw a total of three hits, this night the outcome was a little different with some real good at bats by both teams, and saw Ontario Green come out victorious with a 4-2 win.

Left-handed pitcher and 2016 grad Jack Berczi was on the mound to start for Green, while 2016 righty Devlin Jovetic received the nod for Black. Berczi ended up going four innings, limiting the damage in the second with one out and the bases loaded, he was able to only give up one run, while punching out the final two hitters of the inning. Berczi cruised thru his final two innings, allowing only one base runner due to an infield error.

Jovetic matched Berczi thru his four innings, mixing in his curveball to keep Green off-balanced while recording four strikeouts. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound righty looked comfortable on the mound, repeating his delivery and staying around the strike zone his entire outing.

Black was able to get on the board first in the second, taking advantage of three walks while 2017 speedster Lucas Parente drove in the first run with an RBI single. Green was able to answer back in the third when Bowling Green commit Jake Wilson lead off with a walk, advanced on an error from a pickoff attempt and came around to score on Cooper Davis’ RBI single. Green took the lead as West Virginia commit Gibson Krzeminski hit a sac fly to score Davis and give Green the 2-1 lead.

Black was able to tie the game up in the fifth as Parente lead off with a walk, promptly stole second and came around to score on an infield error. That score didn’t last long as as walk to Niagara commit Joe Tevlin, set the stage for left-handed slugger Ryan Rijo teed off on a fastball that he launched into the visitors bullpen down the right field line. Rijo is uncommitted 2016 grad and is one of the premier power hitters in the country.

That was all Green needed as Stony Brook commit Sam Turcotte came in to pitch the last three innings and striking out five, showing some life on his fastball with lots of swings and misses.

With Green’s win, it creates a long jam in their pool with everyone having at least one tie. Thursday has every team playing one game, with both Ontario teams, along with BC and Alberta still alive to advance to the playoff brackets.
