Prep Baseball Illinois Player of the Week: Mac McGarry

By: Pete Hamot
Assistant Director, Illinois & Wisconsin

Nazareth Academy has sat atop our Power 25 rankings since the first update we made back in early April, and they now boast a dazzling 34-0 record heading into their playoff push. One key contributor to their success has been uncommitted right-hander Mac McGarry (2025), who has helped fill out their potent rotation all season long. He took the ball twice for the Roadrunners this past week, notching a save against former No. 2 Joliet Catholic and also nearly firing a no-hitter in his start on Saturday. For his efforts, McGarry has been named this week’s Player of the Week.

His first appearance came in a 6-2 win over an extremely talented Joliet Catholic club, as he fired 2.1 shutout innings with three strikeouts to earn the save and secure the ESCC championship for the Roadrunners.

His next appearance would come in a 2-0 win against St. Ignatius this past Saturday, and he carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before it was broken up with one out, finishing the game with seven innings pitched, the lone hit allowed, no runs or walks, and seven strikeouts.

On the season, McGarry has fired 48.1 innings to the tune of a 0.72 ERA with just 24 hits allowed, 17 walks and 53 strikeouts. He also boasts a perfect 6-0 record to go along with three saves on the year. The junior right-hander has showed well in front of our staff both in-event and in-game, as he boasts a fastball that can reach easily into the upper-80s to pair with a high-spinning slider (T2418 rpm) and naturally fading changeup.

Scouting Report

4/13/24

Uncommitted, ranked just outside the top-100 for the state currently. McGarry is an intriguing uncommitted arm to follow after our look at him Saturday. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound righty is an athletic mover on the mound paired with a loose, quick, and compact arm. He came out of the ‘pen for the Roadrunners and tossed two perfect innings against a very talented Hilltopper lineup to earn the save. He pounded the zone, with 20 of his 23 pitches finding the strike zone to make for an impressive 86% clip. His fastball played with sink and sat 86-87 mph, touching 88 mph a couple times in his first inning of work. His go-to secondary offering was a short, late-breaking slider that also flashed wipeout capabilities. McGarry will be an arm to continue to monitor on a very talented Nazareth squad. Final line: S, 2 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 4 K
