Game Recaps from Day 4 of Tournament 12

British Columbia Orange vs Ontario Black

Rogers Centre - Ontario Black battled BC Orange Thursday morning in a must win game to give themselves a chance to move on to the playoff bracket. Starter Matt Brash helped that cause by giving Ontario 4.2 innings of 2 run ball, giving up two hits walking four and striking out four. Brash didn’t even give up a hit until the fourth inning where he seemed to become a little fatigued, losing a bit of his command with his fastball. Zach Fascia inherited to base runners coming out of the bullpen, allowing one to score on a base hit to the first batter he faced. Fascia finished with a line of 2.1 innings without giving up an earned run, four strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman. He showed good feel for his breaking ball down in the zone and a heavy fastball to change the eye levels of BC hitters.

Offensively, Ontario was lead by Andrew Yerzy, who had an RBI single in the top of the first, while Reese O’Farrell knocked in two with and two out single in the third. Brad Aldred had the fourth run batted in on a third inning bases loaded walk. Luke Turino was the leadoff man for Ontario and he was on base three times with a walk and two hard hit singles through the right side, adding a run scored. Elliott Curtis also helped the cause by hitting a double in the first and drawing a walk in the third, scoring both times.

BC Orange was able to bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom half of the seventh inning, but Fascia was able to shut the door, ending the game with a strikeout for a 4-2 victory.

Offensive Standouts

  • Luke Turino - 2-3, 2 H, BB, R
  • Elliot Curtis - 1-2, 2B, BB, 2 R
  • O’Farrell - 1-4, 1B, 2 RBI

Pitching Lines

  • Matt Brash - 4.2 innings, 2 ER, 3 H, 4 BB, 4 K’s
  • Zach Fascia - 2.1 innings, H, BB, HBP, 4 K’s

Futures Navy vs Quebec Blue

Rogers Centre - Futures Navy were looking for a little bit of redemption in this one, as Quebec had already beaten them earlier i the tournament 7-2. Little did they know that they were facing Junior National Team Member and locked in starting pitcher Mathieu Deneault Gauthier. Gauthier had it going today, throwing a complete game, no hit shutout against Futures Navy, allowing only 5 base runners to reach all game. Starting pitcher Ben Abram for Futures held his own as well, utilizing the bottom half of the zone, only giving up three hits in four innings, striking out four and walking one. Relief pitcher Harley Gollert came out of the bullpen pumping strike after strike, getting ahead of hitters, as he ended up being perfect in his two innings of work striking out three along the way.

Quebec hitters didn’t do much to help Gauthier with run support. Their three singles on the day didn’t produce a run batted in, as the the lone run Quebec scored came in on a wild pitch by Abram in the second inning.

Pitching lines

  • Ben Abram - 4.0 innings, ER, 3 H, BB, 4 K’s
  • Harley Gollert - 2.0 innings, 0 H, 3 K’s

Alberta Red vs Ontario Green

Rogers Centre - Ontario Green had to at least tie if not win this game to advance into the playoff bracket. They sent left hand pitcher and 2016 grad Matt Jones to the mound in this one, who had his stuff going early on with six strikeouts over the first three frames. Matt ended up giving up four hits, three earned runs, two walks, while striking out 11 Alberta hitters in just five innings of work. Jones worked downhill well today, pounding the bottom of the zone and carving corners with his fastball. Working off his fastball, Jones’ curveball was working as well, placing it where he wanted, getting swings and misses all day. Another lefty and 2016 grad Niall Windeler came in relief of Jones and was extremely effective as well. Windeler threw two innings giving up just one hit and striking out four. It was another case of good command with his fastball, moving it in and out, up and down, never giving Alberta the same look twice.

Offensively, Ontario combined for six hits and four runs scored, but had a lot of trouble capitalizing on Alberta’s four errors in the field. There were a lot of second chances but Alberta pitcher Nathan Stark induced what seemed like an infinite amount of infield pop-ups. One bright spot for Ontario was pinch hitter Ryan Rijo, hitting a two out double to score Joe Tevlin in the fifth and seventh inning. Tevlin was able to reach base in both of his at bats off the bench, scoring both times.

Rijo’s two out double in the bottom of the seventh tied the game up at 4-4 and that’s how the game would end. The tie was enough to push Ontario Green through to the semi’s to face Prairies Purple who happened to be the top team in the tournament in round robin play.

Pitching Lines

  • Matt Jones - 5.0 innings, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 11 K’s
