PBR Michigan Spotlight Game: #2 (D-1) Saline vs Ann Arbor Skyline

Saline High School’s Zach Schwartzenberger capped quite a day Monday when the junior hit and pitched the Hornets to a doubleheader sweep against visiting Ann Arbor Skyline. The Hornets kept their SEC record perfect in the 5-0, 8-5 wins.

Schwartzenberger had four hits on the day, including his first home run of the season with a blast deep over the right field fence. The talented junior also pitched the final inning of Game 2 to shut down Skyline after the Eagles scored four runs in the 5th to pull within three runs of Saline. Schwartzenberger earned the pitching win.

Game 1

The day started with a Saline victory in the first contest as the Hornets rode a complete-game effort from southpaw Cole Daniels.

The gifted sophomore used just 89 pitches to tame the Eagles, issuing just five hits while striking out nine. Daniels only walked one and went to a three-ball count just once in his seven innings on the mound. Daniels also crushed his second home run of the season, hitting a majestic blast into the parking lot in right-centerfield.

Saline scored in four of its six innings picking up big hits from junior Jake Finkbeiner. The third basemen singled three times, scored a run and knocked in an important run in the third inning with two outs.

The Hornets played flawless defense to support Daniels’ whitewash of the Eagles.

Game 2

Like he did in the first game, Schwartzenberger led off the second tilt with a double off of the left-centerfield fence.

The speedy centerfielder was moved to third on an infield hit by senior Thomas Miller (Oakland University commit) and scored on another infield single by senior Zach Owings (Eastern Michigan commit). Daniels then hit a sacrifice fly to deep left and senior Mike Schuby plated the third run in the first inning to jump start the Hornets.

Saline was cruising until the 5th inning when Skyline reached the plate four times.

The Eagles used a single by talented catcher Darryn Davis and consecutive hits by Nate Lasinski, Chase Taylor and Jack Lehker to cut Saline’s lead to 7-5.

Davis had four hits on the day, including a double and one RBI. The sweet-swinging lefty hit the ball hard all day long.

Saline capped the scoring in the bottom of the 5th inning when senior Steve Kise singled to start the frame.

He made the circuit when Schwartzenberger drilled a single to right to finish his three-hit game. He also scored three runs and knocked in three. Kise had three singles while Owings and Schuby had two hits each. Schwartzenberger then finished the Eagles off in the final inning, giving up a harmless single while striking out one hitter.

Saline moves to 13-1 (5-0 SEC) with the wins.
