PBR OK Player of the Week: Week Six

Scott Hood
OK/MO/KS/ARK Assistant Scouting Director

There were multiple candidates in Week 6 that were deserving of Player of the Week honors but none more so than Reese Ratchford from Sulphur.  The senior Wichita State commit continued to put up big numbers on both sides of the ball including this week that saw him only get out at the plate once going 6-7 with a homer, triple, and double.  He also hopped on the mound and worked a complete game shutout that saw him surrender only two hits and punched out 17 batters.  Sulphur has quietly put together a nice season and Ratchford has played a large role in their success and they will continue to rely on his production from both sides of the ball to make a run at a title in May.

Throughout the year we will be highlighting players who have had the best weeks as our Player of the Week and welcome all recommendations from all levels.  Please include a stat line for the week and overall season stats as well.

Scouting Report

6/11/19

The 6-foot, 180-pound primary backstop featured an athletic frame with present strength. The right-handed hitter starts with a wide, slightly open stance with weight rocking slowly from frontside to backside. Utilized a controlled leg hang with hands that generated a slightly uphill barrel path to the baseball. Fluid, easy swing with barrel whip was repeated often and a strong lower half allowed for some present power. Demonstrated advanced barrel awareness registering bat-exit velocities of 85 mph. Ran a 7.27 60-yard dash. The primary catcher is an advanced receiver with a soft glove hand. Pop times ranged from 2.02-2.16 with an accurate 76 mph arm-strength from the crouch. Solid hip drive towards the target coupled with adequate transfers allowed for a moderate takeaway to come through a high ¾ arm-slot. Displayed feel for blocking on both sides of the plate evidenced by soft walls created during defensive evaluations.

5/18/19

A physically developed 6-foot, 180-pound muscular frame with strength. On the mound, the right-hander works from a simple and average tempo delivery that he repeats well before striding slightly across his body and finishing balanced. Arm action is clean and fluid in the back with moderate length, coming through a high-¾ slot with arm strength. Fastball was down from where we had seen it before (83-86), ranging 80-83 mph, commanded in the zone. Curveball shows rolling action with 11/5 shape at 60-63 mph, mostly strikes. Slider flashes short 10/4 shape at 68-72 mph.

Consistent barrels in BP with pull side lift and pop, has plus bat speed with ability to add more. Uses simple leg lift to stride and swing, lower half stays connected, strong at contact and extension. Middle of the order bat at the next level. In BP shows a gap to gap approach with occasional lift, 88 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.02 60. Defensively, receives baseball in athletic stance, catches baseball out front with good presentation. On throws down, aggressive and athletic to throw with minimal wasted movement, longer arm stroke with arm strength, ball jumps out of the hand. Feet work quick with good direction, accurate throws at 80 mph for showcase pop times of 1.94-2.20. #2 ranked player in 2022 class, high follow.
