PBR Spotlight Game: BC High vs Wachusett

The Eagles of BC High combined timing hitting, solid pitching and good defense to take care of business against the Mountaineers of Wachusett, 4-1.

Senior RHP Sean Holleran picked up the victory, going five innings allowing four hits and the one run while striking out two and walking one.

The final four scoreless innings were courtesy of freshman Mike Vasil for the save.

Mountaineer senior RHP Tanyon Ventres took the loss giving up four runs (three earned) over six innings of work. Senior Jordan Teevens pitched the final three innings in relief.

The offense for the Eagles was highlighted by two hits and an RBI for junior first baseman Tim Burnes and a towering solo homerun by senior right fielder Geoff Stillman. Ventres and senior first baseman Nick Fitch each had two hits for Wachusett in the loss.

BC High got on the board in the top of the first after an error allowed senior leftfielder Pat Keohane to reach 2nd. Junior first baseman Joe Roddy then ripped a double, scoring Keohane for an early lead.

Wachusett had their best chance in the early innings after a leadoff single and stolen base by senior shortstop Connor Gill. After recording the next two outs, Holleran then walked senior third baseman Dan Jancura before getting Ventres to fly to deep right to end the threat.

The Eagles would add to their lead in the 2nd after a one out double by Burnes. Junior second baseman Nick Viscariello then singled to left in front of a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Pat Rafferty, scoring Burnes.

Each pitcher began to settle in, allowing only two base runners through the 4th inning.

It looked as though that trend would continue in the top of 5th when with two outs Stillman stepped to the plate. He crushed a Ventres fastball well over the leftfield wall, extending the Eagle lead to 3-0.

The Mountaineers would get on the scoreboard in their half of the 5th following a leadoff single by Fitch. Sophomore Mike Fiorelli pinch ran and after moving to second on a groundball, was erased when Gill reached on a fielder’s choice for the second out. Holleran uncorked a wild pitch and Gill moved up to second in front of junior second baseman Kenan Kolanda. The next pitch was hit up the middle, breaking Gill around to score and cutting the lead to 3-1.

Teevens looked to cut the lead further, ripping one to right-center that Eagle senior centerfielder Ryan Tropeano dove to his left for, robbing extra bases and ending the inning.

Poised for more runs, Eagle senior DH Steve Ohanesian singled to left with one out. However, he was caught stealing and it looked as if Ventres would get out of the inning blemish free. He walked junior catcher Luke Rafferty and immediately senior Brendan Connolly was called on to pinch run. Connolly proceeded to steal second before Burnes ripped his second hit of the day, this one down the line in right, driving in BC High’s 4th and final run of the evening.

Vasil came on in relief in the 6th and allowed a one out single to Ventres.

Senior right fielder AJ Papandrea then reached on an error by Roddy at third and the Mountaineers and something cooking. Vasil was able to bear down though and induce a fly out and strikeout to end the inning.

Teevens meanwhile was fantastic in relief keeping Wachusett in the game. The only hit he allowed was with one out in the 7th Tropeano drove one to centerfield that would roll all the way to the wall. By the time he reached third base he made the decision to try for home and on a perfect relay he was gunned out at the plate.

The Mountaineers would go down quietly the next two innings. In the 9th, DH Zach Gull and Gill both singled but with two outs Vasil struck out Kolanda to end the game.
