PBR Spotlight Game: No. 4 Seven Hills at No. 3 Summit Country Day

By Matt Wallisa

It was a championship atmosphere on Saturday Evening as Seven Hills, the 4th ranked team in Division IV, traveled to play Division III’s third ranked team, Summit Country Day.

The pitching matchup paired Seven Hills senior Harrison Addy against Summit Country Day junior southpaw Tommy Crowl.

It did not take long for Seven Hills to put their first run on the board as freshman Brian Goertemoeller came to the plate and reached base by error. He would then advance to second on a pass ball. A couple batters later, Addy would provide his own run support by knocking in the first run of the game and put Seven Hills up 1-0.

Seven Hills struck again in the third inning. Senior Matthew Montieth drove in two Seven Hills runners on a hard hit single to stretch the lead to 3-0 in Seven Hills favor.

Summit Country Day would answer the Seven Hills runs with two of their own in the bottom of the 4th inning. It started with a single from senior Matt Slager (ONU recruit). Then, senior Bradley Fisk executed a hit and run that would later plate Slager on the play and cut the deficit to two runs.. Fisk was able to make it all the way to third on this play due to a throwing error. After a sacrifice fly scored Fisk, the scored tightened up at 3-2.

Both teams put up scoreless frames in the 5th and the 6th inning to set the stage for an exciting seventh inning.

Down a run, Summit Country Day found itself searching for ways to get the tying run on base. Their efforts were aided by an error from Seven Hill’s senior Matt Montieth that allowed Summit junior Jack Meininger to reach first base.

Senior Ryan Erickson advanced safely to first on a bunt that was intended to simply move Montieth into scoring position. The runners would then advance to second and third on a pass ball.

Senior Kenny Kerry stepped to the plate and delivered a walk-off single that drove in both runners and propelled Summit Country Day over Seven Hills with a 4-3 victory.

Seven Hills’ Addy recorded a complete game, but still managed to take the loss. Addy’s fastball was clocked at a high of 79 mph with a breaking ball sitting at 65-66 mph. Summit Country Day junior Tommy Crowl registered a consistent fastball in the high 70’s with a breaking ball sitting at 65-66 as well.

Summit will be back in action Monday when they host St. Bernard and Seven Hills will travel to Lockland.
