WHITEHOUSE - A battle of two perennial powers, No. 5 Perrysburg and No. 17 Anthony Wayne, turned into a pitchers' duel as unsigned senior Nick Munger (pictured right) out-dueled junior Josh Schwerer (pictured left) helping the Yellow Jackets squeak out a 1-0 victory.............. or did they? Take a look for yourself in this link. Home run or double?

Senior Tommy Eichenlaub blasted a long fly to left that appeared to hit the top of the fence, then the pole to the scoreboard before ending up in play for what was ruled a double - not a home run as should have been called.

Eichenlaub was involved in more exhilarating action as well as junior center fielder Thomas Keyser followed the double with a bunt single. Eichenlaub was sent from second on the play but thrown out by Yellow Jacket first baseman AJ Stockwell. Unsigned senior catcher Kyle Durham then threw a rope to second for a double play ending the Generals' scoring threat. All caught on tape thanks to Jordan Strack's video clip seen here.

Just an inning later,  Durham threw out a runner in a strike em' out throw em' out situation.

“We need to execute little things to beat a good baseball team like that and we didn’t execute,” Anthony Wayne head coach Mark Nell said. “The non-call on the home run is not what cost us the game.”

None the less, an extremely well played and entertaining high school baseball game took place between two talented and well-coached teams.

The Yellow Jackets got their run in the second inning. Stockwell, a junior, started the inning off with an infield single before junior second baseman Nick Fleming laid down a sacrifice bunt putting Stockwell on second. After a groundout moved Stockwell to third, sophomore Gus Dimmerling drove in Stockwell with a two-out infield single up the middle when the ball nicked off RHP Schwerer, not allowing second baseman Austin Kottenbrock to make a play.

The Generals had one more scoring opportunity in the seventh. Senior Nick Smith reached on an error and moved to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by junior catcher D.J. Komisarek. A single to left from Cal Johnson then put runners on the corners and on a 1-0 count Nell, the  AW mentor, elected to try a suicide squeeze, Perrysburg countered with a pitch-out resulting in Smith being tagged out going back to third by talented Top Prospect Games participant junior Mark Delas after taking Durham’s throw.

“We knew they were going to squeeze and we were going to pitch-out again, even on a 3-0 count we would've pitched out,” Hall said. "We had nothing to lose at that point."

Perrysburg (14-1), which returned 11 lettermen from last season, will look to keep its 11-game winning streak going at Toledo Start on Tuesday before another Northern Lakes League clash against rival Maumee and possiblly Panther ace Steve Duby, a West Virginia recruit.

Anthony Wayne (10-2), which graduated 13 players from last season’s 23-3 No. 6 rated team, will look to bounce back at NLL foe Napoleon on Wednesday
