PBR Spotlight Game: Roncalli, Chatard, Cathedral Round Robin



Game One: Cathedral 10 Chatard 2

Indianapolis, IN - Senior RHP Nick McCarty got the start for Cathedral.  McCarty, a Notre Dame recruit, had his fastball working right from the beginning.  His first three pitches of the game were 88, 87, and 88 mph.  Cathedral, however, struggled in the first inning committing two errors, allowing Chatard’s Andrew Moralez to score the first run of the game.  Chatard added their final run of the game in the third inning, off Zane Barnes RBI, giving the Trojans a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, McCarty struck out the side, and then led off the bottom of the fourth with a base hit.  Michael Kseniak then reached on an error, giving the Irish runners on second and third.  Ryan Levenhagen again reached on an error, scoring McCarty to get the Irish within one run.  Luke Cuerton followed up with a fielder’s choice scoring Kseniak, tying the game at 2-2.

McCarty struck out two more Chatard hitters in the top half of the fifth inning, leaving the score tied at two heading into the bottom half.  Matt Dauby go things started for Cathedral in the bottom of fifth for Cathedral when he reached first after being hit by a pitch.  Brendan Flood then laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Dauby to second.  Dauby would eventually score giving the Irish a one run lead at 3-2 heading into the sixth.

In the top of the sixth, McCarty once again struck out the side giving him a total of 13 strikeouts on the day.  Cathedral’s offense finally broke out in the bottom half of the sixth. Luke Cuerton led off the sixth inning for the Irish with a base hit to left.  Austin Boos followed that up with a double, scoring Cuerton.  Austin Sparks would then walk, and Harry Shipley reached after being hit by a pitch.  The bases eventually were loaded for Matt Dauby.  Dauby had a two RBI base hit giving the Cathedral a 6-2 lead.  Brendan Flood had a RBI base hit of his own, which was then followed by a RBI double from McCarty.  Luke Cuerton came up again later in the sixth hitting a 2 RBI single.  When all said done, Cathedral took a 10-2 lead heading into the seventh.

Mike Hammel came into pitch in the seventh for Cathedral.  Hammel allowed three hits in the inning, but the Cathedral defense was able to keep Chatard from scoring.

Game Two: Roncalli 18 Chatard 12

Roncalli out slugs Bishop Chatard at Cathedral on Thursday by racking up 18 runs on 12 hits.  Both squads had things going at the plate, tallying 30 runs and 25 hits, including five extra base hits.

Roncalli came out swinging, scoring six runs in the first inning to jump ahead of Bishop Chatard early. Chase Steinbrunner racked up five RBIs on three hits for the Rebels. Steinbrunner singled in the first and second innings and homered in the third inning.  Roncalli built upon its lead with four runs in the second. An error scored Jason Simpkins to open the scoring in the frame, which was then followed up by Steinbrunner's single, scoring Joe Ardizzone.

Four runs in the bottom of the second helped Bishop Chatard close its deficit to 10-4. An RBI single by Max Taylor, a two-run double by Tommy Barrett, and a groundout by Andrew Pluckebaum scoring Tyalor sparked the Trojans rally. Two more runs would cross on Tim Sauer’s home run in the bottom of the third narrowing the deficit to 13-6.

Two Bishop Chatard runs crossed the plate in the bottom half of the fourth, including an RBI single by Sauer making the score 13-8. With one run in the bottom of the sixth, Bishop Chatard closed the deficit to 18-9. The Trojans would push three across in the seventh; however the comeback fell short as Roncalli held on 18-12.

Game Three: Roncalli 7 Cathedral 3

Roncalli came from behind to beat No. 5 Cathedral on Thursday.  Roncalli pushed 6 runs across in the top of the fifth to get their second win of the day.

The game started out quiet as neither team managed to score in the first two innings.   Cathedral then put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third. Harry Shipley scored on a single by Brenden Flood, then Flood game around to score on Michael Kseniak’s single.  Alex Boos would come around to score in the third off a fielder’s choice put in play by Flood. 

Roncalli took advantage at the plate in the top of the 5th as they pushed 6 across.  Brad Fey got the scoring started by crossing home on a ground out hit by Dan Harris.  Joe Ardizzone double to right scoring Aaron Schnell and Colin Hawk would then double to center to score Ardizzone to tie the game at 3-3. Haek was then knocked in off a single by Chase Steinbrunner to give the Rebels the lead 4-3.  Drew Biddle would hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Austin Alte.  Steinbrunner would eventually score on a passed ball to make the score 6-3.  Roncalli added one more in the top of the seventh off the bat of Biddle as he hit in Jordan Reeser giving this game its final score of 7-3.
